Hey, rebuild it. You will never regret it.
If you are planning on using it long term, there is wisdom in having someone who is familiar with and has rebuilt that particular type of amp with good result. I've used Mike Samara on my Citation-II rebuild because he is well thought of and is just over an hours drive from me in Saginaw, MI. So I'd suggest finding out who is good with this unit and get their inputs. You want to avoid the work of someone that talks like they know what they are doing but hack the unit up. Get it done the right way with quality components the first time.

+1 for a rebuild. Sherwoods were all about engineering the best sound that could be squeezed from an amp and finding something that can do as well will cost huge dollars and still not be there unless you have very deep pockets.
From reading of other Sherwood owners who have used Don's services, I would certainly send mine, if I were to acquire another to him. Nothing like having someone who has experience and understanding the engineering behind the original design to get something to sing as there is not as much experimenting needed.
The gent who did mine some years ago had no experience with the Sherwoods but was an old timer who did nothing but tube equipment restorations. Even when he was done, there were some things he mentioned he should have thought about before tackling it and had he, he might have would likely have made the mods as part of the restoration as they would have improved it without changing the sound or circuit.
While mine used the 7591s, if I were to get another it would have been the original S5000 using el34, though less power, I have always liked amps based on this tube design and do not need goobs of power.
Yours to do the best may be easiest to strip down and do a ground up rewiring. This is a challenge even to an experienced tech. Disregard issues of resale value, etc. as this in one of those amps that is still very undervalued on the market in terms of sound quality. After mine was rebuilt, I dumped my Audio Research tube amps as the Sherwood was as good with my speakers and in my system.

Probably personal tastes, speakers etc. I prefer the sound of the 7591's over el34's, particularly the midrange.
I find the midrange of the 7591 S5000II to be just a might boaters and prefer the somewhat lighter sound of the el34 based S5000. Admittedly, I like the sound of most el34 based power amps over most using larger power tubes, just a personal preference.

That's what the original S5000 used. Actually 7189's. Same thing.
