Does the AX-900u qualify as such? It does look pretty beefy (I just went back & looked, 'cause I don't trust my memory -- and it dates from an era when I was pretty busy with Other Things).
all the best,

You right. I don't think he was talking about statement pieces. I just threw that in.
I actually sold the AX-900u when I worked in audio. It was Yamahas TOL integrated. At the time, I felt that Yamaha receivers were declining in quality, but not so for the integrated amps. Also the TOL receiver was exempt from this decline to. Both were a very impressive.
For me statement pieces are all out technical assaults, designed, not to sell large numbers, but to show off their technical prowess. I think that the AX-900u was expected to sell, but being TOL, it definitely was a high tech assault. So to me, it is on the borderline. Regardless, it would be a very nice amp to own.

I heard the AX900 amp in 1990 and it had a typical Yamaha sound, i.e. clean, punchy and detailed. Overall, quite good with the right speakers. We compared it with Marantz PM-94 and preferred Marantz unanimously.
