What are the best Yamaha integrated amps? The CA series, i.e. CA1000 onward or the later AX series i.e. AX900u? Which have the best phono sections?
Follow Ups:
A friend of mine has a CR1000 that was just brought up to spec with some JBL L112s. Sounds great! It was enough to send me hunting for a Yamaha. I currently own a MA6200. It will be interesting to compare the two. Especially the phono.
Many moons ago I had a CA1010 and it had an excellent phono section. It was 90 watts with 30 watts class A.
I have the AX570 and am presently using just the amp section with a tube pre-amp and its sounds better than I expected
... the current Yamaha integrated amplifiers are nice, too.
Of them all,and FWIW, my one-two choice would be CA-1000 and CA-2010... but the better, later (1980s) integrated amplifiers were quite nice, and good sounding, as well.
Just my opinions, of course -- thus do I say (well, imply) that asking which is "best" isn't (again, I'd opine) the right question to ask.
all the best,

But their statement products are a notch above.

Does the AX-900u qualify as such? It does look pretty beefy (I just went back & looked, 'cause I don't trust my memory -- and it dates from an era when I was pretty busy with Other Things).

You right. I don't think he was talking about statement pieces. I just threw that in.
I actually sold the AX-900u when I worked in audio. It was Yamahas TOL integrated. At the time, I felt that Yamaha receivers were declining in quality, but not so for the integrated amps. Also the TOL receiver was exempt from this decline to. Both were a very impressive.
For me statement pieces are all out technical assaults, designed, not to sell large numbers, but to show off their technical prowess. I think that the AX-900u was expected to sell, but being TOL, it definitely was a high tech assault. So to me, it is on the borderline. Regardless, it would be a very nice amp to own.

I heard the AX900 amp in 1990 and it had a typical Yamaha sound, i.e. clean, punchy and detailed. Overall, quite good with the right speakers. We compared it with Marantz PM-94 and preferred Marantz unanimously.
Thanks for the info. I'll soon have a CA-1000 inbound. I'm curious about the Class A option and the MC phono performance. It's had some work done on it and is a daily driver, so I'm hoping it sounds as nice as its reputation!
