Especially for playing LPs, where despite the phono stage's task of boosting the output signal to that of a line level it often isn't enough. If you are asking for advice I'd say pass on the Allied and buy something used but recent from a local dealer. A good shop will listen to what you want and offer you a few options. They may even have a used section where people trade up.

which is about 3.5 watts per channel (single-ended 2A3).
... but my speakers are pretty high-sensitivity ;-)
all the best,

My amp has 10 watts per channel! [smiley thing goes here]
I agree with you that it all depends on the speakers you have. The 12 watt Knight tube receiver would be plenty for my needs.
I'd be more concerned about the age of the unit, requiring it to have an entire recapping, as you said. It doesn't sound like the original poster is up to that task by himself at this point. It could get expensive to have someone else do it.
That thing is 10 watts per channel!? Those heat sinks.look like it is more like 100 unless the amp is the size of a video tape cassette.

The First Watt F1J is a full sized (whatever that means) amp. And believe me, it needs every square inch of those heat sinks. It draws a constant 100 watts from the wall to produce its 10 class A watts per channel. A fun toy that Nelson Pass dreamed up for tube guys like me, to make us doubt ourselves.
I lifted this picture off the internet so you'd have the table and chair as a reference.
Oh, Class A. Now I get it. In winter it replaces the heating system, I will bet.

Nelson Pass has actually put over a dozen different designs ranging in power using the same chassis.

Ever hear the sound of one transistor clapping? That would be the clever SIT-1 and SIT-2 designs. :)
True, but not really any more heat output than some of my tube amps. Summertime is worse. I have the choice of listening to music, or listening to the air conditioning system run in the background.
You Toronto guys have it easy. Even after a sweltering day, at night you can usually open the windows and cool the house down. At least that was my M.O. when I lived in Buffalo. Nights here in SC don't work that way!
Spent decades on southwest coast of Florida before coming here for this ice box.
I am originally from NH where "Give me liberty or, give me death." we lived by. Up here my motto is "Give me heat or, I will freeze to death." My wife on the other hand as soon as it hits freezing she throws open all the windows and as soon as it starts to get tolerable for me, she shuts everything up and works the a/c ago max 24/7.
With the side effects of my chemo, I am cold until it hits about 75.
