I would be reluctant to send a kid to college with a $600 receiver. I don't even pay that kind of money for my stuff!

The Denon I sent to college with my son took a beer bath, which totally killed it.
Yup, the remote for the Blu-Ray player was a victim of the infamous beer bath and no one seems to know what happened to my Godar flat FM antenna.
He's on his second Goodwill $30-50 receiver. The Sony died and the Technics isn't bad. My wife has a nice Kenwood for her studio and cost me $35.
My old Infinity speakers have survived thus far.

Technics may not be the best sounding receivers, but they can take a beating!

Sounds familiar, several years ago I sent my son off with a Pioneer SX-828, Magnavox cd player, and a pair of surprisingly good 1968 vintage Scott S-20 speakers. Only the speakers didn't make it back alive.
Funniest part was when he called and said, Hey Dad, there's a bunch of guys here that want to know where they can get a stereo that sounds like this one.
Let me guess: Blown tweeters!

Good guess! In addition, I seem to recall that someone accidentally put an elbow through a woofer.
