Well I think I finally came to the audio end. Not counting any Lottery winnings of course. After listening to my setups for months to years, I really can NOT imaging improving anything. Everything seems very suited to my tastes, budget and general arrangement.
My two main systems are:
Vintage - Sherwood S-5000 (fully rebuilt, thanks Mike)
New - NAD C326BEE preamp and NAD C275BEE power amp
Speakers - Zaph Audio SR-71 (new) with paradigm powered sub
Second system:
Marantz PM8004 used in passive mode with Audio Monitor RX2 speakers.
I can't imaging nor would I want to start all over again. I'm in listening mode now!

all the best,

Right now I'm really into listening to the Microwave Background Radiation. Some hisses and a few pops - ah - the big bang classics!
No, I use (almost 99% of the time) a Marantz NA7004 network player. It brings in classical stations from around the world.

That made me smile.
Interestingly, there was a story on NPR's "All Things Considered" just tonight on the 50th anniversary of the discovery of... just that... by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson.
all the best,

About the same time I decide I'm completely content with my system, I get the bug to start changing things around... watch out! :-)
How would you describe the sound of the SR71? I have seen the kit on the Madisound website. I have also looked at the Zaph Audio site. John Krutke seems to know what he is doing.
Dave
I know you weren't asking me but I'll interject anyway. I built the Zapf SR71s this winter and recently got the veneer on. They are my best speakers, and I have owned a lot. Up until now, my best standmount speakers were ProAc Response 1s. (not 'sc'). The SR71s have a larger woofer. That they are a bit better than the ProAcs is saying a lot. But then the ProAcs are also a bit tired.
I am now comparing the SR71 with a pair of Vandersteen 2Ci floorstanding speakers. With 4 drivers the Vandys 'should' be better, but aren't. Of course, this is all subjective. The SR71s do not tilt toward the treble end, but they are very crisp and detailed. Deep bass.
Peter
Thanks for the insights. You a comparing them to some very good speakers. How is the driver integration?
Dave
I think very good, the crossover is not too complex, but very refined by the designer. My analysis is minimal - i don't have 'golden ears' but I do a lot of listening. My office/workshop is also not an ideal space.
Cheers
I would consider the crossover to be minimial. I've looked into my other speakers and wow - parts parts parts.
The crossover not only deals with rolloff but impedance as well. Rolloff is seemless and the impedance is ruler flat.
I see you have a Sherwood tucked behind that speaker?
charles
Also I don't find the treble "polite" at all. I have no problems with it. Perhaps it's your amp?
Shoot me an email and I'll go over it in detail.
In short - I'm very happy with it.
The paper cone woofer really maintains an open natural tone. I'm using it with my tube amp and it really does go down cleanly to 45-50hz. I also use a powered sub, but if can be used without one.
charles
Yeah, but have you ever heard Braun (ADS) LV 1020 tri-amped speakers driven by a good Tube pre? It was a great sound!
I came across a demo pair at a hi-fi shop I frequented. They replaced double Advents back in '74. While I used an H-K Citation 11 at the time, I borrowed an Audio Research SP-3a from a friend. Nice sound.
Soon afterwards, however, I discovered planar speakers and bought some Magnepan MG-IIs. Used the woofer sections as subs for a while.
Just sent me that winning lottery ticket and I'll get right on it.
