Actually the base response is quite clean and pleasant on these speakers after the replacement. However, I have gotten used to music at ear level. Also, the workshop location does not provide the reflective surfaces these need. I am going to try them soon in the living room to see what they do there.
Also, I don't drink Jack Daniels at all, much less when I work in the workshop.
I have a brain disorder, called Arnold Chiari Malformation. When it decides to give me trouble, it interferes with my sequential organization and fine motor skills, and it did on this project, hence the attachment of the grills after just putting 2 screws in to test the woofer...and the occasional bandaid.
I try to make light of it, sometimes in my posts, because it will never go away. I have managed quite well with it, according to my neurosurgeon.

If the original woofers are salvageable, this speaker will fetch a lot more money with a stock rebuild. I have seen them go in the $200 range. There are a lot of people out there who believe that Bose speakers are the best out there. I would argue that, but Bose is certainly one of the best marketers out there. Also, I think those nice alnico Zenith 10" woofers could be put to better use, too.Are they the 16 ohm woofers from Allegros? That wasn't a bad design. I would like to try 4 of them in an MTM arrangement with a compression driver/horn like an Eminence or Peavey.

As has been posted here before, these are really interesting speakers.. The combination of the foster horn tweeters and the alnico woofers is very nice. i found a pair with cabs that were literally rotting from below, they must have been in a wet basement or something. Oh, and my woofers measure 6 ohms across the taps at this point.

The clipboard cabinets are the only weak link. Otherwise the Allegros have quality driver. Even with that they do surprisingly well. I would wager that a braced Baltic birch, marine ply or MDF cabinet, combined with a good capacitor would make them very competitive.

Now that I know that the other drivers work and I replaced the capacitor, I will go ahead and refoam the woofers and put them back in. (I am getting pretty good with removing the grills at this point!)
Actually, up against the wall, as suggested by Bose in the owners manual, and with a sub, (even with rogue woofers,) they sound just fine for easy listening. Without the sub, a bit muddy down low. They might benefit from being off the carpet a bit to make use of the downward pointed tuned port.
No more Bose bashing, I promise!
