At $150 per, I'm not sure it really matters.
What matters is; Do you like 'em?
If they are available locally they are certainly worth it in my opinion as you don't have to pay for shipping, or bother with leaving feedback etc....

Geezer,
What you say is true. Honestly haven't heard them or any SA to my recollection. Between these and pair of KLH 17s.
Best,
Dave
Well, I vote for the KLH 17's.
They are very easy to rebuild. Basically all you need is some clear GE bath and tub 100% silicone and four (2 per speaker) 4uf metalized polypropylene capacitors. Those 17's once sealed and re-capped are killer.
If you don't believe it, maybe Jerry (Bold Eagle) will chime in.

The choice between a Smaller Advent and KLH 17's may depend on what you're using for an amp. KLH 17's were optimized for tube amps of the early-mid 60's. As a result, they may sound a bit thin and bright with solid state amps if they have direct coupled outputs. Adding a one ohm resistor in series will help a lot. That was suggested originally by Ed Vilchur. I did use my KLH 17's with a Pioneer SX990 with very good results; but that receiver had a capacitively coupled output stage.
The Smaller Advent was designed and voiced for use with SS receivers of the early 70's. They just need to be able to handle a 4 ohm load. They are also less sensitive than the KLH 17's. The SA's have better power handling and go lower in the bass. The 17's have a nicer midrange and do voice and some instruments better than the SA's; although overall balance is similar.
In restoring the KLH 17's, the silicone sealer works very well to restore cloth surrounds on KLH and AR speakers - use just enough to seal the weave in the fabric.
As to the capacitors, the KLH 17 needs non-polar electrolytics to retain the same balance. One of the caps is a dual cap with three leads, so to replace it you need two separate 2 uF caps - you connect the leads together at one end, and leave the other ends free to form the three leads, I taped my pair together. Then, there's a larger single cap. On my two pair of 17's, the later one from 1971 used 6 uF caps, the oolder 1964 ones used 8 uF. Supposedly, KLH adjusted crossover components to bring the frequency response to match a "standard" they kept. I'd try the 6 uF first, and if it sounds like there's a hole in the middle, add a 1 uF in parallel and see how that sounds.
Henry Kloss was behind both the KLH 17 and the Smaller Advent, so the balance will be similar if used with the right amps.

Thanks Jerry;
It was two, 2uf caps per speaker for the 17's. I stand corrected.
Those 17's sound great driven by a EL84 amp.

First off, thank you all for your input! This forum is one of the most amiable, informative down to earth free from snobbery forums I frequent! Many are willing to help and provide good information beyond the original question.
A great place!
Appreciate y'all,
Dave
