looking for input on how eico ST40 and/or ST70 sound compared to the more popular vintage integrated amp brands like sherwood, fisher, scott, HK etc. are they good candidates for having a refurb done?thanks

I have an ST 40 and I've done a few mods and some up grades. changed caps, cleaned switches, dressed the wires better, etc. I know this ST40 is very nice. Like Mike said, there is "clarity" in its sound and every instrument is quite distinguishable.
I'm sure there are better amps out there but for the relatively small amount of money these amps cost and the not too expensive upgrades they are a great bargin.
I find the EH 7591s to have the most powerful bass. The JJ tubes are good with a little more finesse in the upper ranges. The Westinghouse 7591As are the best if you can find some good ones. The price they command however is rather absurd. The Svetlana tubes perform well in the ST40 with perhaps the best midrange.....

If restored (and upgraded) by the right guy - Mike! then they are wonderful and hard to improve upon.

both of those amps can be very comparable to the big separate amps...Here is one I did a complete makeover on running 6P3SE tubes.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Nice looking iron in that amp.
