He was driving them with McCormack DNA 750 power amp together with a home-made tube pre amp, which was designed by a local technician and the Garrard 301 turntable. I haven’t heard it lately, so I’m not sure how it sounds now, perhaps, it’s time to give it another listen.
My Martin Logan speakers were actively bi-amp as well as I used to drive them using the Classe’ or Krell power amps on the bottom end and the Audio Research D-250 tube amp driving the panels. I was using the Marchand two-way 4th order 24dB/octave Butterworth crossover and sometimes the vintage Peavy that I modified to operate on the 2nd order 12dB/octave using the Linkwitz–Riley crossover at 200 Hz. I used to get comments from many casual listeners saying that the overall sound was huge and visceral as if the musicians was playing in front of you.
I’ve heard a lot of comments that Martin Logan speakers sound is not seamless, just to be clear I have never heard the bottom end playing catch up game with the rest of the frequencies or the overall sound was not cohesive, in fact, in my listening room the opposite is true as the bottom end frequency response was just as quick, agile and impactful with the rest when the music calls for it.
I’m sure your CLX is just as impressive and very cohesive based on your descriptions….

I have heard those same comments about the dynamic woofers not being able to keep up with the panels and that was true but in the last 9 years technology has gotten a lot better and they are now able to blend it well with the much faster woofers they have.I have two of these and the other is a bit different in style but they sound identical and they work really well setting one behind each of the CLXs..
What I really would love is if Magnepan would sell the Tympani bass panels again as those were really nice with my Acoustats I had..
Another guy LA has the CLXs and he is using a folded horn bass cabinets with German made field coil woofers..They are a pair of 12 inch in each cabinet and he powers them with the Mac 7200..The panels are running off a pair of Mc275s all rebuilt and running KT90s.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
However, in my case I was using the Genesis G-928 with 15” woofer powered sub to mate with my Martin Logans.Speaking of which, I used to have the Acoustats and the Magnepan MG3A as well, now you know that I used to be a planar speakers junky earlier in my career. I also, have the McIntosh MC 7200 power amp briefly that I was using to compare against another vintage of the same era the Sansui BA 500. I thought the Mac was excellent sounding but it tends to run out of gas on heavy load demands in which the Sansui seems to cope better with it. However, as good as the Mac sounded, the Sansui bettered it in the midrange area where it sounded very sweet just like the ARC D-90B that I also own at that time.
To be honest, if I had kept all the equipment that I have accumulated over the years, I would have to build another house. You’re so right about your assessment in our hobby in that, there’s so much love but none enough room for them...
