The Empire "speed adjust," or the knurled nut that tilts the motor shaft with attached pulley was not meant for large corrections in speed. It's more of a pitch control I believe so if you need a large correction something is wrong or you need a new belt that's the correct one.
I tried a couple of the so called replacement belts but the original provided an almost dead on correct speed per the strobe and the "replacements" made the table run too fast for the minimal speed correction available so do your homework on belts if need be.

Did you ever find a correct belt supplier?
I bought a new 598 belt from one vendor, link below, and if I remember correctly, the table ran very close to proper speed with it but when I went back the the original belt I could get an exact speed adjustment so I left the old belt in.
Then I stopped using the 598 so it became a dead issue. But in doing research I had found the Turntable Needles site to be informative on the subject.
There's lots of posts on many sites about what belt to use and my conclusion over the confusion is that I tend to believe that it depends on what 598 you have.
Read the "warning" under the picture of the belts on the Turntable Needles Site. You need to scroll to get down there.

Thanks Dave Ill give this a shot.
You can boil the belt if it is stretched. It has worked for me in the past.
