X100-C and X202-B integrateds.

I really like the earliest, brass faced Fisher integrateds. First, their "care" during that late '50s & very early '60s era was significant. In that era's Fisher builds, they chose some of the finest opt iron they could get, by Todd Electric, #926--- on the EIA listings. Fairchild and Madison Fielding also used #926 iron. All of the mid-'50s Fairchild amps used Todd. You all know how coveted those 255, 260 and 275 amps are, right ? So, that's a great start, certainly. The sonics of "The 101" or X-101 or X-101-ST 7189/EL84 amps can compete with anything, just like the hyped up S5000 by Sherwood. Please remember that we cannot judge any of these vintage amps with the original caps still utilized inside. If you haven't heard them recapped, you haven't heard their real potential. Another few EL84 integrateds to possibly choose are the Madison Fielding 320 and later 360; plus, the also overly hyped Eico HF-81. The Scotts are way too cap loaded for my comfort. The Fisher 101 with brass faces have a similar phono pre to the 400C; very endearing. The Eico 81 is preamp stage livable as well. So are the Madison Fielding items. The Scotts might require major preamp stage mods. Likewise, the later aluminum faced Fisher integrateds might require preamp stage mods to your liking...
Let's see, now. You currently have a rebuilt Samra-ized Sherwood S5000, yes ? You like it, yes ? It's a 7189/EL84 type amp. Why are you now asking about 7591 amps ? Do you really want to get more confused, my friend ? The aluminum faced Fisher 7591/7868 amps can sound sweet, but their stock power supplies hinder performance. If your speakers can work well with 7189 based amps, why go after hotter running, higher power amps ? If you want to hear the 7591 at it's best, try the Mac 225 amp. But, then, don't expect the 225 to be as sweet sounding as your 7189 amps.
BTW, back in the days, I have owned and tried every Fisher, Scott and Eico to be had, including monoblocs and stereo power amps. I even had the Fisher X-1000 and HH Scott 272 with EL34s ! Speaking of higher power or larger integrateds, IMHO, the best vintage integrateds were the Scott 272 and the Bell 6060 Carillon. While I don't miss the 272 (ultra complexity inside with dozens and dozens of coupling caps), I would miss the super sweet sound of the Bell 6060. I rarely listen to the Bell Carillon anymore, but, every time I try it, I need to keep it around...
Best Regards and good luck finding these amps to compare together. I am guessing we need to go to Mike's to hear the real vintage integrated shootout...
Go find a Grommes 50PG; almost unheard of around here but up there with the Sherwood S5000II and better IMHO better than any of the Fisher tube units, especially in the phono preamp.
Grommes, like Sherwood was more an engineering firm than audio component manufacturer and in fact the audio products were not the main product, test and lab electronics was.
The 260A power amp competed closer against the Marantz 9 than say the McIntosh MC60 and Fisher 20 series. Grommes reissued the 260A a couple of years ago and a somewhat more modernized version called the 360.
There is a following of their Little Jewel series of amps that depending on version and date used a variety of tubes.

I am just asking about them because I have the ability to buy both of the integrateds for a real good price.
If the price is right and they are in nice shape, they are certainly great investments...
His Sherwood is a 7591 amp..Totally different topology..I have a Scott 272 I got a from a friend of mine and it has beautiful iron but the 296 is really the one you want as that is the 7581/KT66 or 6L6gc but they command really high prices.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

I bought McIntosh separates and enjoyed the music.
"Please remember that we cannot judge any of these vintage amps with the original caps still utilized inside."
Absolutely, positively, 100%, correct!
