Quick question for Mr. Samra or anyone else who knows: Which tubes directly influence the sound of the phono on the amp? I believe it's at least the far left one when looking from the front. Is the one next to that also part of the phono?
Also, what tubes have folks used successfully for the phono?
Follow Ups:
are going to have the most influence over the phono section..Eli and I like 7025s in that position and Sylvanias are one of my favorite there but so are Telefunken 12AX7s and Mullard CV-4004s.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I have a Sherwood S5000 again. I had one in 2006 and sold it in 2007 because my Eico HF81 was better but thought it would be fun to try again.Cheers, Sherwood users

This isn't a sell because I'm NOT SELLING!
But get one and have Mike rebuild it like he did with mine.
He used a mix of coupling caps, ahhhhhh, it's just too much to mention all the good stuff he did under that hood. Or is it bonnet for you?
It is the best sounding stereo I have ever had, or will have.

Didn't you you say "the best" when you had your Marantz 18?
:)
it's been a process of both growth and change of taste.
After a lifetime of hearing the same "type" of sound, ie that 70's vintage sound, my listening "style" developed or changed. I think it has to do with dabbling in new gear. Kind of like finding out - what else IS out there. Then coming back to vintage and looking for a new sound. I really think I found it in this fully rebuilt Sherwood.

Thanks Charles. I do my own soldering but will probably borrow some ideas from your's - and respectfully use Mike's ideas.
Do you use your S5000 with the SR71s speakers?
Pete
Appreciate it.
Not a problem my friend.

As Airtime stated, it is definitely valve 1 & 2 for the phono section on a Sherwood S-5000.
I also include from the owners manual the recommended tube substitute(s).
Mikey has my S-5000 at this time doing his "thang"-
I can't wait!
........I was a vegetarian for 15 minutes... until the main course.
Did you have Mike rebuilt? If not - then DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT!
Thanks Mike, you ruined my irrational need to buy more stereos!
Great job Mike!!!!
Again, thanks
charles
I'm hoping (actually I KNOW) Mikey does the same thing for my S-5000.
Mine already sounded pretty darn good and is very nice cosmetic condition.

Nope. It was rebuilt by another well known restorer, but I still might get it to Mike someday.
Any idea regarding my question?
The post I linked to has the phono tube info.
charles
I see the recommendation for 7025's for the phono, but what positions are they in the amp?
I think V1 and V2 (left two tubes), but let me double check.
