Mike,
You mentioned the Dave Gillespie mods below in the thread about the EICO integrateds. I read his mod for the HF-60 to use KT-88s and was impressed especially with the changes to the 6SN7 driver. I wonder though whether the extra drive capability would make any real difference with less demanding outputs such as EL34/KT77 or 6L6. What do you think?
Also, I wonder whether it would be better to have a CCS in the leg of the LTP. If the CCS is attached to a negative supply, wouldn't that give us the best of both worlds---exact balance plus the same drive capability?
Follow Ups:
The 6L6gc requires very close to the same drive as a KT88 so from that standpoint the answer is yes.
Even with tubes that require less drive, having more drive capability always makes a difference because many times you are able to operate the driver stage in a much more linear portion of its curve and lets be honest, the driver and voltage amp stages are what we mostly hear in an amplifier because of the high amplification factor of those stages.
So yes,it will help all types of tubes.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Thanks, that makes sense. What do you think about using a CCS in the driver LTP?
Putting a CCS in the tail is a nice idea and it keeps the phase splitter honest and balanced by forcing it to draw equal amounts on both sides of the tube..Thats kind of sketchy analysis but you get the idea.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
