I have no desire to shell out my hard earned money for a receiver that doesn't interest me in the least. Also, when I discovered that I could get separates for around the same price and receivers and integrated amps, I lost interest in the latter. However, I do have some experience. I volunteer for a NAMI Thrift store testing and pricing equipment for them. I test a lot of receivers, both new and old and this is what I have generally found. The newer stuff sounds alright on an easy load, but if driving a tough load or pushed hard, they lose it. They do not live up to there power rating and clip quite easily. Also, the tuners universally suck. In other words, they are paragons of mediocrity, designed to be tossed in 3 years.
The older better brands are built like tanks, sound great, exceed their power ratings and have tuners that rival my TOL separate tuners. I am talking about Denon, Yamaha, Nikko, Luxman, NAD, Proton (NAD and Proton are not built like tanks), and Sansui. Even the inexpensive Technics receivers are better than the new junk.

Just wondering if there was another one, since that one usually doesn't have that much in the way of electronics. I still go there regularly, looking for records. Haven't gotten much there lately, but the store will always have a place in my heart, since it was where I made my best thrift store buy ever. Blue/Silver SAX 2386 Kogan Beethoven violin concerto. Cost me 20 cents. It's not perfect, but it's still worth about 5,000 times what I paid. That was some years ago, when the store was still over on Connecticut Ave.
That is the one! Most of what I get is junk, but I do get some very good stuff in. However, I price it to sell. It does not make them any Money if it sits there. You can't get EBay prices in a place like that.
Saturday, I put out a nice pair of fairly modern Polk speakers and an big Onkyo home theater receiver, but I doubt it will be there when I come back next Saturday. Unfortunately, the Onkyo CD player that came with it would not read disks.
I am glad you found the Beethoven and are enjoying it! The do get some very nice records in. I like to think that the store enables people to enjoy thinks that would have been casts off. I also know people who suffer from mental illness and NAMI does a lot to help people like this. Mental illness is one of the few diseases that we(as a culture) still blame the suffer. It is good that there are people trying to help too.
