Guys Iv'e read the threads about how to balance the 5881 output tubes and this should be pretty simple but I'm having trouble.
I put the phono plug in one of the jacks, set my meter to dc volts, insert the hot lead into the plug and put the ground lead on the outside of the plug?or shield.
I'm using a older micronta meter and maybe I dont have it set properly because it looks like its reading 45v but that can't be?.If I try to move the balance pot nothing changes.
Help...???

The phone jacks break the cathode circuit of each final so you need to set your meter to measure current not voltage. A typical W4 will draw somewhere betw 40 and 70 mA/final so a meter setting of ~ 100mA FS is appropriate. Go back and forth betw the 2 jacks while slowly adj the bias balance pot till current is equal on both. There is no absolute bias value adj, just balance.
Thanks Steve. The problem was a blown fuse on my meter for the 300ma setting.all is well and the balance is good.50ma per tube.
