In Reply to: RE: RCA attenuators or passive pre to reduce output from CD player? posted by graciouslee on February 27, 2014 at 06:08:24
If you can DIY, the Radio Sack (Alps) pot is supposed to be good and it is quite cheap. When you find the right setting, you can then measure it with a volt-ohm meter and make a cable with fixed attenuation using a resistor. You will save a bundle and still have top quality!

Follow Ups:
You will need connectors for the RCA jacks, a small project box and the 10k alps dual volume control.
I built one that I use, on occasion, when I feel like fooling around using as a passive preamp.
The one I have is a resistor based 23 step, stepped attenuator, using 1% tolerance Dale/Vishay resistors. Having now tried it, I think I am using the step that gives approx. 18dB attenuation and it works fine. Will maybe make some in line attenuators of that specific value but there's now no urgency to do so.
Thanks again for the advice.
