Hi: I'm considering purchasing a Pioneer SA-9500 Integrated amp. Does anyone out there have any experience with this amp ? I love the look and I am curious if it would be stable with a 4 ohm load. Anything anyone can tell me about it would be helpful. I appears to be in great shape as far as looks, and it has been cleaned serviced and checked for any problems. I have not verified if the caps have been replaced or not. The amp is just under $400 which seems like a fair price if it is as described. So are there any issues with this model ? Date of manufacture was my HS graduation year 1976.............. Thanks for any information :^)

Just HAD to have it! It was a very harsh sounding amplifier. I mean it screamed. I nicknamed it "the ear bleeder". It was very dynamic but not well balanced tonally. Clean and clear sound. Perhaps with the right speakers it may work. I was using a pretty standard three way speaker at the time.
It looks great but WOW - was it harsh!!!!
Just my two cents.

Thanks for the manuals and links gentlemen, Very helpful :^)
Well a Pioneer 9500 II was my second amplifier and I traded in my Sansui for it since I had bought a Pioneer 9500 tuner and then wanted a matching set.
Seems most people told me I should have stuck with the Sansui.
I thought the Pioneer amp sounded just fine driving my Pioneer HPM 100s, but I simply can't recall exactly what it sounded like.
One thing I remember though: it looked cool!

It was their top-end integrated and it is - as I am sure you know - built like a brick outhouse.
Beefy amplifier.
You can pick up docs for it several places (most likely).

The top-line Pioneer stuff is generally quite decent.
FWIW, I only have one Pioneer component, and it's not exactly 'top end' but it does look cool and it sounds... OK.
all the best,

I really like those !

SA-9500: 80 wpc into 8 ohms @ 0.1% THD; 100 wpc into 4 ohms @ 0.1% THD
SA-9500II: 80 wpc into 8 ohms @ 0.05% THD; 100 wpc into 4 ohms @ 0.1% THD
The relatively small output increase into half the impedance (and the better HD 'spec' for the "II" into 8 ohm relative to 4) suggests that - by modern standards, at least - these aren't really "high current" amplifiers... but I wouldn't necessarily hold that against either version! ;-)

IE, I graduated high school in 75,did a year in college where I saw other peoples stereo systems...I was hooked. I've never thrown out a stereo magazine and have a lot from that year.Let me see what I can dig up tonight,I'll find you something on the Pioneer....Mark Korda
Hooked would be a good description for me and vintage stuff. lol Thanks Mark

Coffee mugs on a Phase Linear; as if they did not already have enough issues. I'll take the Sherwood tuner on the top shelf.

Hey Mark,
What's up with that Crown gear? My IC150A was like fingernails on a blackboard. I have read that you can change the IC chips and get a good sound out of them. Have you done anything with them?
Dave
The power amp isn't bad, actually.
I really haven't invested much time nor effort into the preamp save to determine that it does indeed work (like vampires, I believe the IC-150 preamps are very difficult to kill).
all the best,

I'll bet the both work, although be carful with the amp. They had a reputation for frying speakers when they did go! They are really built! You might want to look into chip upgrades. Those sow's ears could become silk purses!
Dave
IE, I looked thru my old mags and found some stuff, but the others giving you info were way better and more informative...Mark K.
Your collection appears to be normal,I see nothing to suggest a problem. :^)
actually, she's quite tolerant of my... hobby; she's a saint!
all the best,
