I should be picking up a new set of Magnepan 1.7's next week.I have a Mc240 amp and I have read that Maggies like at least 200 watts to make them sing.I want to start thinking about S.S. amp.options should I find that I need more power.I will keep my Hagerman Clarinet line stage as well as my Carravigo tube phono stage. It would be nice to have both a tube and S.S. amp. to use.It would nice to get a amp.thatr is easy to restore or doesn't need much restoration.I'm thinking a 1-2k budget.

What kind of shape is your MC240 in? Has it been given a good going over? The "McShane Treatment", as done by Mike Samra, squeezes every last drop out of old "Macs". It pays to remember that tube amps can be pushed up to just entering clipping safely. OTOH, SS amps need a margin of power, given that they clip "hard" and damage tweeters.
While power hungry, "Maggies" present a tube amp friendly "flat" 4 ohm load. Limited tube amp damping factor is not a problem.
I suspect the MC240, if in proper repair, will be quite satisfactory for a great deal of your music library. "Head banger" Rock and 19th Century "potboilers", like those penned by Liszt and Suppe, may be problematic. The rest should be fine, unless you like to knock plaster off the walls and ceiling.
BTW, a new AVA Synergy 300 is just inside your expense limits and should yield approx. 300 WPC into 4 ohms. Given it's 2 ohm stable, "flat" 4 ohm loads, like "Maggies", should be easy to handle. FWIW, I've owned AVA products for MANY years and find them to be HIGHLY satisfactory.

I drive my MG 1.6 speakers with a B & K Reference 4420 - dual mono that puts out 350 watts per channel into 4 ohms. Plenty of clean power. The older B & K amps show up occasionally. Good luck and have fun!

My advice is to look for a CJ MF-2500A. They come up on Agon for around 1500 from time to time and are new enough they don't need upgrading. 250X2@8, 500X2 @4. Plenty of juice.

Conrad Johnson SS sounds quite nice with the 1.7's My CJ MF2300A works quite well (about 500 watts/ch into 4 ohms). Been listening to a tube amp for the last month but still have the CJ and will probably hang on to it- change of pace once in a while
I'd recommend Emotiva, either the XPA-200 (200wpc) or the XPA-2 (300wpc).
I use the XPA-200 with MMGs, mainly because the XPA-2 weighs about 80 pounds and I didn't want to mess with something that heavy.
I tried about five different amps over the last year but nothing woke the Maggies up like the Emo.

Thanks for the information on the Emotiva amp.I expect to pick up the new 1.7's next weekend.Any vintage S.S.amp.suggestions?I don't think that I want to invest in a higher power tube amp.,and will try the Magnepans with my Mc240 for some time at first.
There's a Forte Model 5 for sale on the Asylum Trader right now. It's got more than enough stuff for Maggies.
No connection to the seller.

I will not pick up the 1.7's until next Sat.They must be in demand since it is taking about a month to get them.It will be interesting to see how the Mc240 drives them.
The 1.7's sound very nice powered by the Mc240.I want to live with them for a few months before I try them with a more powerful amp.I think that it helps that I am using two powered M &K subs with the Magnepans.
