So, how do you all think the ADS L1590 series 2 stacks up against today's offerings for, lets say, 2k and under new. Have improvements in driver and cabinet technology and design software made these venerable mid 80s speakers altogether obsolete? What would one have to pay for new full or nearly full range speakers to better the L1590/2's in overall speaker goodness. Feel free to break down what that involves, but for me, resolution, dynamic scale, and musicality trump pinpoint imaging and analytic accuracy. I am not looking for a vintage system or sound, but rather for the the best possible music reproduction/dollar. So in addition to new speakers, what used but newer that the ADS speakers give them a $4$ run. I have power and a reasonable amount of space. And I like proper listening levels, i.e., like at a good seat at the concert, whatever the music may be (but not like at concerts where they are trying in fact to set dbl record levels).
Chime in!
(I posted this to speaker asylum as well.)
Thanks!
Richard

I am very found of the ADS 1590. It excels in coherence, dynamic range and deep base. It is a very good classical music speaker, but also does great on everything else. I looked at you system. Your Accupahse will drive them fine, but they will not be as transparent as your Thiel CS 2.2's. I don't think you will prefer the ADS in general listening. I you want them so you can shake the rafters now and then, then fine. but I don't think the can supplant you Thiels.

I can tell you from experience that ADS speakers are one of the favorites of audiophiles everywhere, especially when you drive them with vacuum tube amps and preamps..I have a pair of 810s and a pair of L-620s and the smaller 2 way ADS/Brauns and ADS speakers sonically reminded of my AR3s in many ways with the dome mids and tweeters and the sealed cabinets. The ADS were first speaker designed by computers and they did a great job for a dynamic speaker.
Are their speakers today will excel over the 1590s? Absolutely but the speakers I like in the 2k dollar range would be the Magnepan 1.7s and those are not practical unless you have a dedicated room.
Honest amplification is better than 2nd order distortion anytime.
...when the 1230 and 1530 were replaced by the 1290 and the 1590. The 90-Series was good, but the 30-Series was so much better.

I've had my 1230s for 31 years. I've heard other speakers since then, but none that impressed me enough to "upgrade". I've found the 1230 to be a speaker that does well with all kinds of music, classical especially.
I'd need to spend thousands to get speakers that would eclipse what I have.

That happens a lot in speakers..The so called improvements many times are not as good as the previous offering.

I tried them with multiple different tube amps mike, He would be much better off buying the Magnepan's.
I picked up a pair of the 1590's a ways back. Brought them home with hopes that they were going to sound as good as they looked. Well that just wasn't the case. The Valve was half closed, Not very open at all. Just trying to help a guy, There are much better options out there for under 2k
Maybe a nice pair of Spendors?
I agree
I think Maggies are wonderful..

I was not impressed, I thought the L1590's were tubby and dead in the mids, they didn't last long in my house at all. I've done better for less then $20.00 If you're thinking of buying a pair, It's probably not a great idea. one of the worst pair of speakers I've ever brought home. Lucky for me, I was able to make some hobby money off them.

What where you driving them with?

The 1590 excels at LOUD, dynamic range and they have prodigious bass output. They have true visceral impact... like a good seat at a concert.
As for current speakers, I haven't a clue as I pay no attention. The last speaker I heard that could do what a 1590 could do, but better, was the Nelson-Reed 8-04/B. But, even that was a long time ago... and more expensive. I think they are rare today.
