Posted this in Digital Drive, but with no takers, so sorry I'll try here.....
In 1993 I bought a Rotel RCD-955AX, and used it until a few years ago, when I moved exclusively to computer-based digital music (JRiver and FLAC files). The RCD-955AX has been stored away. Pulled it out this weekend to check it over before giving to my daughter for a first decent system (along with an old but refurbished NAD 3020B and a nice NEW pair of PSB Alpha B1's!).
Alas, the player spins and plays, but no analog output! I connected an external DAC to the digital output and it works OK. I'm not giving up the DAC so does anyone know where to start. I have all the tools/meters, and have worked on amps/preamps my whole life, but never a CD player, etc. I have downloaded the service manual, and will start with power supply checks.
Any ideas on what chips/op-amps/DACs to check or look at? No noise - nothing comes out of the analog outs -- maybe a faint hint of the music, but nothing loud or buzzing, etc.
Thanks for any hints on where to look!

I have one of those, and it sounds really good. In fact it sounds just like its more expensive cousin, the RCD971.
I'd recommend fixing it. Something in the analog stage, so I'd look first at the caps.

Hi-
I have a pretty fancy Denon DVD player that I had the same problem with. After sitting for a long time, went to use it and while it appeared to be playing, I got no output from the analog rca jacks. But go from the digital out to a DAC, and music. I figured that maybe, you could only use one set of outputs at once and it was just a matter of pressing a button to switch from digital to analog. But no button I pressed would make any difference.
Until, I tried switching before I had a cd playing. Come to find out that the player wouldn't switch outputs while a CD was actually playing, but would switch when it was stopped.!
Now that I know that, I can use both analog and digital outputs.
Maybe it is the same with your Rotel. Or maybe not.
good luck,

If cutting out the middleman lowers the price, why are we paying the government to stand between us and the markets?
+1 on checking the small electrolytics that are used as output coupling caps and/or the power supply electrolytics
three options.
1. buy a cheapo DAC from amazon; about 30 bucks.
2. buy a cheap DVD player 30 dollars and let her use that as a CD player
3. If you really want to fix the CD player; see if you are getting a signal at the DAC output (use a scope). If so then either the output relay is deffective, an output coupling cap has gone bad or you have a bad solder joint somewhere on the analog out put side.
I would take option 1 or 2.
