Recently I purchased some more "modernish" gear. A used Denon pma 520 int. amp from the 90's(very reasonable price) came to me first, then a new Ipad 3 (highway robbery!). Well, my Marantz 2325 had kind of fallen to the wayside. This was as much due to it's massive weight (I like to swap gear around) as anything. Anyway, after 6 months of sitting idle, I swapped the 2325 into the Denon system through the Ipad. It absolutely smokes the Denon, no question...more detail, way more depth, of course that "headroom" that is hard to describe...the Denon is no slouch, but what was I thinking?? the Ipad 3, on the other hand, is just as good as my Oppo CD player, so that is encouraging.

Follow Ups:
Bought a Denon home entertainment 5-channel receiver back in the '90s for the kids. Bunch of hype, expensive back then, was real junk audio wise. Oh, the tuner section just plain sucked. Likely worth about $50 now in mint condition. I say go 1970's vintage on select items. I also guess some pre op-amp design may be best.
I had a similar situation. I was using a Marantz 2330. I also like to move things around and that beast weighted a ton. I popped in a NAD C326BEE, and honestly with the exception of some lower end power on the Marantz over the NAD - the NAD bet the crap out of the marantz.
Marantz makes a nice sound. And I am a die hard Marantz fan! But obviously their strong point is NOT that headroom sound.
Marantz has it's sound just like any other brand has there own distinct sound.
Enjoy

then comes the long term eval. But right now, I think I likee the big Marantz better.Plus, I didn't have to actually move it to set it up! Of course, I love my 2226B with tubes mucho as well....I'm lucky to have bought them when they weren't so $$.
