This coming weekend my Community Association is holding a large garage sale in which I will have a few tables. I've decided to do major cull of vintage equipment in all types of condition. I have done several posts on CL describing items and stating that they will be available for viewing and purchase the day of the sale. As you might expect I have had a frenzy of emails asking me to pre-sell items, some drawing intense interest.
On the one hand, as a person who likes to buy gear, I understand the motivation to get a shot at stuff immediately and there is a temptation to take the offers and move the stuff. The other part of me knows how brassed-off I'd be if I made the effort to show up for the sale only to find that pieces had been "cherry picked" in advance. I've decided to honour my original intent to sell at the Garage Sale event only, but I'm curious how others here feel about my decision.
Follow Ups:
Most of your sales will be completed in the first hour. The most critical thing in sales is the interest of more than one person. Someone who didn't get the item they really wanted might be compelled to buy a lesser item then and only then. Start your sale promptly at the opening of the event and no sooner. If someone arrives early, it's best to let them drool.

Of course I'm biased because of my decision, but it's great to hear from you all to confirm that it's what you'd expect and feel is right for you as well...it's going to be a great sale!! :-)
We used to have yard sales all the time but the relentless pestering by collectors and dealers who would call or show up days ahead at our door and demand to know what we were putting out and if we would sell early....I understand that they are running businesses and have to be aggressive and time efficient but it took all of the fun out of it for the Mrs. and me.
By yielding to those demands you are encouraging the behavior. If people stop doing that for simple yard sales, the behavior might abate.
Your decision is the correct one in my opinion, everyone should have a chance at all the gear, some of the people who get a good piece will end up like us Asylum Inmates ........ I think that's a good thing :^)

I've gone to several sales, arrived early enough to be first in line, only to find out all the good stuff was sold the night before.
I hate that.
I'm not the kind of guy who would ask the seller to sell to me before the sale.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Don't pre-sell, take it all to the event and make your area look more complete. You can list the remaining items, after the event, on CL.
