I'll take D Boon, Zoot Horn Rollo, Fred Frith from the left side of the dial… For blues, Hubert Sumlin.
Clapton is the most overrated musician who ever lived, for my money. What does it say for the man when he's only the 2nd best guitarist on his own best album?

Hmmm...seems to me the notion of Guitar "God" ( or "godliness" )has to mean more than just virtuosity, which so many of the listed players can be aptly attributed as having to lesser or greater degree.
For me, it conjures up more of the "awe" factor such as those who have for me created that "out-of-body" experience either while home listening or even better when live in concert. By that criteria, and again it will be different for each individual, ( unless perhaps we consider the impact and longevity of impact on a generation or more ), it narrows it down for me to Clapton, Gilmour or Neil Young. These are the three players who simply through the sheer force of their playing ( White Room / Comfortably Numb / Like a Hurricane for example ), have transported me in a quasi-religious way.

don't expect to get much support here but for my taste the two best guitarists of the sixties rock scene were jorma kaukonen and zal yanovsky.
the best guitarist today? without a doubt charles 'lil charlie' baty. he is the second player in this video.

.
had the politics of the day had not been so cruel we would have heard more from zal yankovsky.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAgP3229jho
charles left the band some time back. he was replaced by 'kid anderson' from norway. kid anderson is a very very good player in his own right but charles baty is special. charles would literally blow eric clapton off the stage if given the chance. i watched charles back in '84' at the club i booked music battle it out with duke robillard who at the time was playing in a band called 'roomful of blues'. lil charlie opened the show. the two later did a guitar showdown. the expression of dukes face told the story. he didn't know what hit him.

His music connects emotionally with me more than most.

I know some here are going to find this hard to believe but I think Roy Clark is 1 of the best guitar players that has ever lived! I saw him twice in concert and he just blew me away on the guitar, banjo, etc.!
Good Call.

I do not normaly like the best of questions or polls, because if you look over the list of people chosen so far, they all were influenced,by someone
before them.So does that mean the people that Influenced them are not as good anymore?I am not trying to be sarcastic,I just think it is something to think about next time we judge who is the best of whatever!I saw Roy Clark twice in concert and if I would have seen some of the others mentioned in concert I might have thought different,
but I doubt it!He did mention some of the people who influenced him over the years, such as Merle Travis, and others that escape my mind right now.Brian
Great stuff but too bad the audio isn't better! How about this one? The ELECTRIC FLAG from the late sixties featuring Nick Gravenites (vocals & harmonica), Harvey Brooks (bass), Buddy Miles (drums), Barry Goldberg (keyboards) and Mike Bloomfield (Gibson Les Paul). Mike gets my vote as one of the best ever.

Well, uum, T-Bone Walker?
"He (R.M. Nixon) was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena, and the style of a poison toad." H. S. Thompson
Can't leave him out,y'know.I second the mentions of Robert Fripp and
Terry Kath and there's Jimi Hendrix,as always.
Chet Atkins,anyone?
I saw them together in an awesome blues gig!

good guitar players - Kaukonen, Bromberg, Renbourn, Terry Kath, Doc & Merle Watson, Tony Rice etal - and - so many different tastes. I could never pick one "God".

Don Rich could eat their lunch. Not to mention Sleepy LaBeef who can play (and sing) over 2,000 songs.

All you guys didn't even mention Gerry garcia
Amen....but it's Jerry......
It never fails to amaze me who people idolize as "guitar gods". I once heard a guy say that the guitar player from Jethro Tull was awesome! Let's talk about who AREN'T guitar gods...I'll start with KISS...these guys suck so bad they had to dress up to draw people's attention away from the fact. I once heard a song of theirs (besides I-I-wanna-rock-n-roll-allnight...) and guess what? It sucked. They sucked, still suck, and will continue to suck on their upcoming tour.
.......compared to Gary Moore and the late great Rory Gallagher.
of Fleetwood Mac circa 1968-70. BC
He's criminally underrated and kind of more or less forgotten. As a blues guitarist, I think he surpasses any of the 60s British guys.
Cheers,
Bobbo :-)
Either John Scofield, Bill Frisell, or Al Di Meola.
Cheers
Lar
The best of those three is Al Di Meola, but you cannot compare him to Knopfler or Clapton!
Hendrix, Malmsteen, EVH are also candidatesP.S. Try posting this in music forum where there are folks who will get really riled up on this topic!
