In Reply to: RE: Where to find grill for Altec 847A "The Seville"? posted by low_budget_listener on July 02, 2009 at 10:33:36
Seems to me there was a guy who was looking some years back for enough folks to go in with him to have those grilles made up for the Valencias. In those cases, Altec started with wood lattice grillwork then switched to a similar pattern but in plastic. Later Valencias used foam grilles.
In the plastic/wood case, they were brittle and broke easily. Finding speakers with them intact today is quite a find, indeed. Your best bet, then, is a set of donor cabinets, I'm afraid.
You might want to check at the Lansing Heritage site and the Altec board sponsored by Great Plains Audio (GPA).
Cheers,
David
Thanks, David, for the info. I posted on the Altec forum, and I'll probably put something up on the Heritage site as well. I guess it will take a bit of luck, but from what I've read, a lot of the Sevilles have blown tweeters, so maybe I'll be able to find someone willing to part with the cabinets, or just a grill.
Thanks again!
Regards,
Jim
I've got saved searches set up for many Altec speakers, and grilles do show up occasionally -- that is, grilles only, which I understand is what you're looking for. You may have to wait a while, but one or a pair will turn up.
Not sure which is more fragile, the Seville grille or the 3000 tweeter? (But, *what* an incredible tweeter it is!)
That's a great idea, thanks. I just set it up. I hadn't really paid attention to saving searches before.
I've read about how fragile the tweeters are on these. I feel very lucky to have found a pair of the Seville in perfect functional condition. They're even in good cosmetic condition, other than the one grill. I'm listening to them now...
