I've noticed in many (most?)vintage systesm the balance control consistes of a 2-channel pot, one section used for L & one for R. Conventional and easy to understand. On the other hand, I've also seen a scheme where one mono pot is used with the wiper grounded, and one side going to L and the other to R. This seems like an elegant way to go, no? What are the drawbacks? I would guess someone will say cross talk between channels, but with the center grounded, doesn't seem possible.
And actually, such circut connection is not a Ground (only the SAFETY connection is Grounded), but a Common Current Return for both channels.
