Today is my first mandatory unpaid day off in the late great state of California. Reflecting back on how we got here is a 30 year study of greed and stubborness. I am listening to "slippin' in to darkness" by WAR as I write...
Vintage audio will get you through no work better than the reverse (at least for a while)
revolting?
Monday is a furlough day for me and my fellow employees. Our Pay Stubs yesterday actually said "Enjoy your Independence Day and your Furlough Day!"

Not a good situation and it is IMHO only going to get much worse. Read today they are issuing IOUs. I wonder if you can pay your taxes or estimated taxes with one of the IOUs.
I can see the courts getting loaded up as a result of this action.
When the District of Columbia got bad about paying their vendors, many of them (including the computer company I worked for) refused to provide services. We requiered payment in advance. They did not take us up on it.

I can see California government closing shop if something radical does not occur. If I were a vendor with the State as a client, I'd also want the cash in advance. California though has another problem in that it has a large debt service payment this month and on the cusp of not being able to make the payment and fund the cash payment it has no choice but to make. If it defaults on the debt payment, that would be it for the State. If it happens it would cause a domino effect with other marginal States.
We do live in interesting times! It has been an amazing string of errors that has brought us to this place. I hope we can get through it!

I've worked 39 days straight and would give anything for a day off to listen to some vinyl. Ah the joys of working in television.
I will work over the holiday weekend as well unfortunately.
Such is life in the 21st century.
"Pretty soon you're gonna pay"
Take heart, man - in a few years you'll look back on 2009 and say "those were the good old days".
Hopefully in a few years I will retire, until then I am grateful for a paycheck while I can get it. We've been dancing this dance for a long time here in the not so golden state....now we're going to pay for the prop 13 corporate sweet deals and the legacy of sleazy politicians by screwing the public sector, education and health care....yahoo!
