Would this be a good combo? Are there any other suggestions?
Thanks, David
I used a Grado Blue in my AR-XA for a while without any major hum problem. BUT, I don't have very efficient speakers (Boston A-70's), and I live in a condo so I don't listen real loud, and hum just isn't that much of a problem in my setting.
I had a Shure M91ED at one time too and that is a nice arrangement on the AR-XA as well. If you can find one, you'll be happy with it.
Sadly my AR-XA needs restoration and is currently sitting in a box in storage right now, replaced for the time being with a Technics SL-1200...which is a very good table in its own right. Someday, the XA will be brought back to life.
In order:
-- No, it's not the best match (yes, hum *can* be a problem, but the mismatch was more than that) - not necessarily bad, per se, just not as good as my recommendation, which is ...
-- Shure M91ED: try and get one with a good or NOS stylus, or order a replacement from JICO (SAS or otherwise); I use the M91ED (NOS stylus, but that can be tricky getting these days) in an AR-XA and used it in an XB, and the friend I sold it to (my loss, IMO & fwiw) still uses it - it was the original cart on that tt, as supplied by AR when new, and they knew what they were doing
I've used other Shures and an Ortofon X-3 (sadly discontinued) and they also did well - always wanted to try a real, *vintage* Stanton 681, but that is much pricier than the M91ED, even with an NOS stylus
I have an AR XA and had a Shure M91ED (with genuine Shure stylus)on it for quite a while. EXCELLENT combo! (until the stylus was damaged)
Now I'm using an ADC QLM-36 MKII which sounds slightly better, but it's really finicky about tracking force.
Grado cartridges are prone to hum in AR turntables.
