I posted this in the Speakers Asylum but go no replies, so I decided to post it here. I just got a used pair of KEF C25s and have not found much about them in kef.com. I would appreciate hearing from prior owners/listeners on:
o the quality of the drivers,
o frequency responce, etc. stats,
o are they based on the BBC/Harbeth LS 3/5a design or the KEF 103.2 design,
o possible receiver/amp choices for driving them, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Joe
Follow Ups:
KEF C25
tweeter:
19mm (.75") fluid cooled metal dome
woofer:
160mm (6.5") poly cone w/
32mm (1.25")diameter coil and diecast chassis
NOTE: this is the B160 model driver
Freq Resp:
65-20 +-3dB
-6dB @ 55Hz
Impedance:
4 ohms
Sens:
87dB
Max output:
106dB
Recommended amp power (8 ohm rating):
20-70w
Available matching bass units:
C200SW
these passive coupled-cavity enclosures with 200mm (8")drivers extend system response to 40-20 +-3db at 87Db sens and 4 ohms and raise the max recommended amp power from 70w to 120w.
NOTE: With the woofer modules, these are, I believe, basically the same as the Reference 103/3 but with cheaper tweeters.
Bought mine new in 1990 and still have them. Did a lot of listening and comparing at the time and out of what was available to me then they were the best. About a year after buying them I was disheartened to find the the comparable Energy was superior, imho.
Do not have spec in front of me but go something like this:
Freq resp 65-20 +-3
sens 88db
4 ohm impedance
100w max power
They are very detailed and accurate sounding, almost clinical, and can be a bit strident since there is absolutely nothing below 60Hz, but what is there is near perfect. They commit only errors of omission. I have always run them with a 70w HK integrated that can be switched into 4 ohm mode. I bought this amp specifically to match these speakers (even the loudness contour matches the rolloff of the KEFs). They still sound pretty good. Was just listening to that system last night. Also, since they can be sort of bright it is best to use fat cable with them. When this was my main system I was using 10ga Original Monster Cable.
KEF made a pair of passive bass modules to go with the C15 and C25 that brings the bass response to 40Hz. I always wanted to get those but never did. With those band pass modules the system is virtually the same as the reference 100 or whatever, except for the cheaper tweeter.
I am currently using them in my stereo HT system and they do a good job there.
Do not crank them too loud for too long...I did and have damaged one of the woofers: it thounds alithle phuzzy at low volumes sometimes now. My fault entirely.
to post more complete info tonight. I still have the brochure, etc.
The KEF C series was a budget line. I remember liking the C10 or c15, but
as I recall there was great variation in sound from one model to the next going up the line.
The C20 may have a bit of a 'cupped hands' coloration if memory serves.
The 103.2 and LS 3/5a are quite different from these models.
(dump finds), in very nice condition.
I thought they sounded quite good. Gave them to a co-worker in need.
They were designed to be used up against the wall, so the LF response was shelved. If they had a 'cupped hands' coloration, it didn't catch my ear.
all the best,

Unfortunately, each speaker was missing both woofers, and, upon further examination, each speaker was missing its tweeter, too. And further examination wasn't all that much, as the grills were long gone, too. The cabinets were in fair shape. Other than that, I guess these could go on eBay as 'near mint.' They are a great pair for playing around to see what works. Got most of the crossovers and two small 8-inch woofer holes and one small tweeter hole in each.
Main question is how did the grills attach?
From the fine KEF fanboy site link below. Data on the following page of the scan.
all the best,

Advertising blurb says "Bass is plentiful and extended," but the C40 spec says that applies only at 68 Hz and above.
Is there gonna be a capacitor in the crossovers to keep the lower frequencies out of that bottom woofer? What are my chances of having anything work OK if I put in some driver that goes a couple of zip codes lower? I know that this is not what the original designer, if any, of these speakers intended, but if he wants me to follow his design when I don't have any drivers, he should send me a proper set. I figure that for $5 I can afford to learn from my own mistakes.

all the best,
mrh
it had the B110 woof/mid and the T27 tweeter. the only C series i know that have some following is the C80. B139 active oval woofer, B160 mid and the T33 tweeter. some say it even sounds better than the TOTL KEF 104/2.
i'm more of a fan of the 1970's KEF. i love my KEF Calinda. passive B139, B200 woofer/mid and the T27 tweeter. sorta sounds like a big LS3/5A.
i mainly used Yamaha NS-1000M as my main speakers, but i will never sell the Calinda.
see ya,
Robby
