On Monday I got a pair of used Urei speakers... moved them down to my basement listening room.
Last night I went to listen to my new pride n' joys and discovered my cat decided to eat off 1/2 the foam surround on one of the Eminence woofers. He also gnawed on the Urei blue horn foam. Luckily there was no damage on the Altec drivers themselves.
I'm bringing in the Eminence driver today to get a new foam surround - and now the basement will be locked off...
By some QUADs and take the cloth off of them. Leave them plugged in of coures. That will cure them! Just kidding!

P. T. Barnum used to advertise a "Six-foot man eating chicken." While people thought they would see a huge chicken hungry for the flesh of man, they saw a tall guy eating--you guessed it--chicken.
I hope a don't see a speaker, or anything else, eating cat! Though after your experience, I could hardly blame you. ;-)
I have two cats that loved to claw things. The vet recommended a hemp scratching post...it sits near my collection of speakers. They're probably tempted to scratch the speaker grills, but they're more tempted by the scratching post, and opt for it. I've had other scratching posts made of carpet and corregated cardboard, and that didn't do the trick. Something about the hemp rope is magic with the cats. One of them does sort of act like a fat lazy stoner, so maybe that explains it. He sits in between the speakers during anything classic-rock related. The other cat likes opera.
I've actually avoided buying both DCM Timewindows and Maggies because of their resemblence to scratching posts. I love music, but love my cats more I guess.

Depending on what your feeding the cat they do taste very good with Noodles and a little RED chile sauce. Not sure how speaker foam would effect the meat.
NO CRITTERS in my house save those in the walls.
You must have gotten Greg's 813s?
Welcome to premium speakers! No need to upgrade ever again! I enjoyed Chris's pair immensely for the time that they lived with me.
Is the Circuit Shop or Meniscus doing the work?
We have three cats, none have ever shown any propensity to go near the speakers although I did "train" the youngest with a can of duster air to avoid all electronics and album cover spines on my shelves.

I am cat lover and have two kitties. I had a cat years ago that was very intelligent and was always into seeing what was going on. One day I was working on a receiver (Sherwood S-8500) and had a speaker driver laying on the carpet playing. This cat (his name Gordon) comes up to the driver, listens, then softly puts his paw on the center of the cone trying to figure out where the sound was coming from.
Not to long ago, I was rewiring my house as it's from the 20s and my cat (Cedric) chewed on the old wires for very long time. I guess vintage wire insulation has a good flavor that cats like. LOL
All this is why I don't allow cats in the house...plus I just plain hate them. Sneaky lil fucks.

How do you think his digestion was after all that foam?
My cats use to use the grilles as scratching posts and speaker wire and power cords to chew on

My cat had not bothered any of my equipment ever and then one day out of the blue he decided it was fun to chew big holes in the foam around my home office system DCM Time Windows that have until then survived unscathed since I got them in the 70s..Now every now and then he bites another hole into them. I guess I will redo them in cloth instead and hopefully he will leave them alone....

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats. From day 1 they have not been allowed in my music room. I would be afraid of what I might to to one of them if they damaged one of my Altec 604s.
They will come to the door and look in, but they don't cross the threshold, plus I keep it locked when I am not in there. I do this for their own safety and wellbeing. :)
they never did anything to my Altec Model 15 speakers... I guess some speakers taste better than others!
Yeah, growing up we had several cats and they always left the speakers alone. Weird. Maybe it does have something to do with a certain kind of speaker? Or just a weird cat!
Just like humans, it all depends on the cat and his personality. I have two cats who love to lay in front of my listening chair during sessions. The female was a gift and had been de clawed. She will go up to the Maggys sometimes and softly knead against the grillcloth but no harm done. The other guy is a Korat I have had for 15 years. He has all his claws but will only claw hemp scratching posts of which there are two in the house. He shows absoloutely no interest in speaker or grills. So go figure........
