I'm very excited. i haven't listened to them yet. the owner assured me they are in great shape and i can take them back or change for one of his other 3 pair if there's something wrong. i paid $550/par. not free, but a more than fair price.they are near mint. even have the original tags still taped to the back. he's giving me his stands, but they were buried in the corner (with a another pair of NS-1000 on top of them). so, I'll get them in a few weeks when my friend buys another pair. i do have 9" metal adjustable AVF stands that should work.
I'm going to buy the 5-way binding post kit on eBay, but i guess I'll have to buy some cheapie pin terminations for now. right now it has those cheesy spring loaded posts.
anybody compared the 1000M to the 1000X (larger cabinet and carbon fiber woofer). I'm pretty sure he only has 1000M, but i can't tell as the other pairs were in a dark corner. all are black though.
I'll be using my McIntosh MC60 tube monoblocks and Precision Fidelity C4 tube preamp for reference.
Follow Ups:
Hi, I've mine powered by a Mac 7270. A friend of mine use a 250 watts ARC tube amp to tame the harshness and the bass went lower. If you do not like the black colour, use a sander to sand it down to bare wood and apply a coat of mahagony laquer to it. The crossover is huge and can be reversed mounted on the outside. But needs to reroute the wiring. There are eight huge alu. can type capacitors that might needs to be replaced. A good project for a DIY guy.
Have Fun.
in the late 70's along with 57's (used but late prod'n black ones), and some minis+plus subs, LS3/5A, DM5's by B&W, MET7's. Subs were local black / veneer stand/column types, low Qtc sealed! And then, I heard of and then heard a pr of Audiosphere's then NEW (ACT - Australian coy. not USA) Model 3 spheres, audio tweakie 8 inch two ways, no lowpass!!!, good sounding MF caps, and air coils - for the Fs notch, and some broader EQ up higher! IIRC
Read the recent review of those Japanese eggs on Stereophile OR even old Gallo reviews, and understand why I still have them! ;-)!

I wouldn't doubt that the 1000's sound great with
top tube gear..I used to sell them with the M4 Yamaha
amp..never great to my ears...but I heard another
sister store with the speakers driven by the B-2 amp
a VFET design...much much better
Enjoy them
No room for them in my den now..WAF won't allow it
$500 was aa more than fair price ...I think the MSRP
on black versions was 1400 with the ebony closer to
2000...Got my c2A on a factory discount...
too bad I din't spring for the speakers then... 50% off
as a salesman's discount would have been nice -these last 30 years
I am currently using an M4 with my Spendor BC-1 speakers. I don't have a B-2 but I do have a Sony VFET amp. I was wondering about them. The M4 sounds good to me in the Auto Class A mode. (YMMV!)
If you set them up properly, I think you'll like them.I have owned a pair of 1000M's since 1984. I still use them in my primary system. They are quite revealing, and can tend towards harshness on poorly recorded material (particularly rock), but they are WONDERFUL on solo piano and acoustic instruments.
Don't be afraid to use the front panel attenuators to reduce the treble and mid if you find them too harsh. I typically run all of mine in a "9 o'clock" position.
Make sure you tighten up the screws on all the drivers and the cabinets. They are sealed boxes, and to sound their best - they need to be sealed.

do you have the same L-pad settings on each speakers or do you vary them a little based on room acoustics? meaning like you would run the tweeter on a speaker near drapes a little hotter to compensate?the NS-1000 are truly amazing in their tonal accuracy. i always thought one McIntosh MC-60 amp was a little "duller" with less gain and sparkle than the other. i could never really verify until the NS-1000 came to town.
the "hot" mac creates a lot of hiss with no source, the other has far less hiss.
switch the amps and the "loud hiss" switches speakers.
you turn the stereo reverse switch on my preamp, and the hiss doesn't switch channels, which leads me to believe there's definitely issues with the macs.
good thing i was going to have them gone through in a few weeks anyway. couldn't have done this without the yamahammers ;-)
also, i agree, the soundstage is HUGE, but unless there's obvious stereo separation with an instrument, it all gets blended into a wall of sound. so, not the greatest imaging.
but, that's the price you pay with really bulbous and big dome midranges. really wide dispersion with not much focus. that's okay though, the speakers sound very smooth and sexy. a narrower baffle would have helped, i bet.
my KEF Calindas don't have nearly the attack and detail of the NS-1000, but they image a lot better, but the sound always seems to stay between the speaker plane and never jumps out at you.
the yammies are keepers, they sound like ESLs but without the hassle. i love the bass, it does a surprisingly great job of keeping up with the domes. I'll get a longer interconnect for the sub later.
as far as power, i don't think i've ever comfortably listened to anything above, say 95DB. the macs don't sound stressed at all with the speakers, so I'm good there. and they sound smooth as silk. thy retain their lively attack, but it's NEVER harsh. people are right when they say the NS-1000 + tubes = HEAVEN.
once i get the macs ironed out, i think i found my last stereo system...
Robby:Yes, I use the same pad settings. BUT...that's because my room is pretty symmetrical. The NS1000's are equal distance from the side walls, and both walls have bookcases on them.
IF I had an assymetrical setup, I'd definately play with the controls.
I agree that the imaging is not SOTA for 2007. They really weren't designed for that, and most vintage speakers don't image the way modern ones do. These were designed for the recording studio....
I also agree they sound like ESL. I own Magnepan MG1.5's, and the NS1000's share many of the same sonic attributes.
I have run them with SS amps of 200 watts (Yamaha M70), and 185 watts (McCormack DNA-1), but I like them best with my CJ Premier 11A tube amp (70 watts). I NEVER lack for volume.
As far as harsh..... Last month I was listening to Michael Jackson's Thriller on Vinyl, and I had it REALLY loud. It did actually sound a bit harsh - until I turned it down......
Enjoy!

tell me mre about your precision fidelity preamp.
ha ha. well, it's a Bruce Moore design. dual cascode with 12 tubes. sounds nice with an incredible phono stage, but i should probably have it gone through as well. lots of old electrolytics in the power supply. the audio couplers are seacore polys. decent stuff.here's an asian site documenting a rebuild. try google's language traslator to read it:
