No advantage at all for directly behind woofer. I've never seen
any high-end speaker that does that. I prefer on the front, just below
the woofer. I suspect that closer to the floor would be better than
towards the top. Especially if it's tuned on the low side.

Maybe that's what you want?
I have a pair of JBL 4331's that I use just for the 2331 15 woofers. Everything else is disconnected. I run them low-boy. (laying down sideways)
I have them up off the carpeted concrete floor on large 3" thick slabs of slate (one large 24' X 16" X 3" slab for each box).
I had them turned with the ports at the bottom. When I turned them so the ports are at the top I thought the bottom end got better. Better definition, etc...
It could be room and personal preference dependent.

Altec Valencias have the ports placed mid way up the box. Also the JBL L200, the same. I never gave much thought to it but I would think the port at the floor would be very dependent on what the floor is, i.e. wood, carpet, concrete.
FWIW both of these originally had 3" risers built into the base. I removed them and replaced them so they sit 6" high, closer to my listening level.
I hear ya, it will sound different ported away from the floor...
maybe better, or worse...but I use EQ, so it's not a big issue
for me.
