I'm using the Sonarquest unplated cu with the aluminum housing. These were compared to the budget P&S that was said to have a very full bass presentation or something to that effect. While the SQ doesn't have quite as full bass and maybe not as deep every other aspect of the SQ is superior, better soundstage, clearer and smoother. Very worth a try IME from my experience and for the price. T456

But none have beaten the very reasonably priced original Furutech FI-11M (Cu) AC plugs for SQ, in my experience.
However, the bare copper Sonarquests are good value/sound for the dough, IMHO.
Agree 100% with DG2 on the plated Sonarquests, though. Add to his spot-on comments, a glare and amusicality, at least in my system. No fun to listen to, sadly.
Of course, YMMV.....
Winston, Can you tell us the difference between the Furutech cu and Sonarquest cu plugs if you directly compared the two. It seems that the Furutech cu is your favorite of all plugs you have tried, correct? Thanks, T456
The Sonarquest are slightly exaggerated in the upper mids and treble (meaning just a wee bit forward and bright, which can increase the excitement factor some), just a tad, when compared to the Furutechs. The Furus are smooth and clean and properly warm and full sounding. Very neutral and balanced, to my ears. The Sonars are a bit 'rough' sounding by comparison, as well, with little imbalances here and there that give it that roughness. The Furus are really a very nicely balanced, neutral sounding connector, IMHE.
But their pricing went up a lot since I bought my Furus long ago, so the relatively inexpensive solid copper Sonarquests were tried instead, and found to be quite acceptable sonically, again, when using the pure Cu type. Not perfect (but what ever is in this hobby?)
Hope that helped out.
Cheers,
WS
Ok Winston, Thanks for the review. You might consider damping the plugs with Mortite rope caulk. IMO one gets a bit more instrument body so they will sound somewhat fuller. The well respected Herbie likes rope caulk so it's not just me. I might try one FI-ll to round things out a bit. Yeah, they ain't $30 anymore. T456
Still not cheap, but not US$50+, either.
If you grab one, check it out and let us know what you hear.
You can try filling the barrel with XXS clear quartz crystal chips (ala Alan Maher's former "Circuit Breaker Filters") for another big change in sonics. I drilled a hole in the plastic barrel of the Furutech plugs and poured in the crystals and then sealed with tape. Some swear by this mod, others swear at it. Definitely worth a try. Adherents claim reduced noise, better low-level details and air, with better midrange presence without glare (but YMMV, and all of that.) Crystals are available on eBay, cheap.
Akiko Audio sells various 'sticks' and other items with quartz crystals inside for big bucks, so save some cash and buy your own micro-sized clear quartz chips and DIY. Give the crystals about 72 hours to fully stabilize for best effect.
Sonic Craft is closing out the cu Furutech plug at $35. Prodded by you I ordered a used one I saw on Ebay before I checked out SC and should get it any day now. I will report back. Considering the respect given to this plug 35 ain't too bad. T456
