HI Guys,Seeking opinions on Ikea Bamboo butcher blocks as speaker platforms. Floor is wood laminate over concrete. When knocked, wood laminate has a hollow sound, hence the decision to place speaker on a platform of some sort. Presently using 3/4 inch MDF as platforms. Just placed flat on floor.
Floorstanders are spiked (rounded tip)without spike discs. Thinking of replacing the MDF platforms with Aptitlig Bamboo butcher blocks from Ikea. I believe there are 2 sizes...large is 1 1/4 inch thick and the thinner block is 3/4 inch thick. Is thicker better in this application? Though not expensive, there is quite a difference in price. Wouldn't mind springing for the thicker block if it would make a difference though.
Has anyone compared MDF and Bamboo as speaker platforms? Any feedback on differences in SQ (if any)will be greatly appreciated. Will I be wasting my time and money?
Thanks!

Hello,
I tried a bamboo cutting board under my PC source to try its SQ. My floor is oiled oak.
It gave an apparent emphasis on the upper mids to highs, which I liked a bit, because my system has a lot of bass and lower midrange energy. It did balance it in a good way. It did make the total sound signature a bit analytical.
I believe it won't sound good on a bass-light system with a high midrange-treble energy. But you can always try.
A loudspeaker plinth tends to be quite heavy, rigid, and most often spiked to the floor.
A moderately thick 3/4" board might make a good base for DIY stabilizing outriggers, but I would opt for a much thicker board for use as a loudspeaker plinth.
I didnt read ;he other replirs but try some Herbies big fat black dots or do a DIY so the mdf or bamboo is not on the floor.

Thanks everyone.@Awe-d-o-file...I do have 8 herbies big fat dots which I am using for something else. Did try it on my speakers....speakers (no spikes) on big fat dots...on MDF platform flat... on floor. I think one of the dots is slightly thinner but I just couldn't stop the speaker it was under to stop wobbling a little. So I scraped that idea a few months ago.
Btw Guys... I am assuming that Bamboo is a lot denser than MDF. Is being denser desirable in this application? Marble or any type of stone...I heard could result in a brighter tone...any truth to it?

I have my big fat black dots under 185 pound speakers with no problem. Email Steve and I bet he takes care of you. Also since you have spikes I was wanting you to try the dots between the mdf and the floor. I dont like the idea of the mdf direct on the floor. Maybe its not an issue but Id try something even a towel if thats all I had.

@awe-d-o-file. Just a quick question. In this a application...ie...floorstanders on spikes on mdf or bamboo platforms on big fat dots on floor......would the big fat dots serve as couplers or decouplers? Read that I should be looking into coupling, however big fat dots are more of a decoupler? Thanks agsin.Anyone else can chime in? Thanks

I was thinking those budget isol-pads under the platform.
Maple would probably be best but pricey. Take a look at isolation platforms at Timber Nation.
Ive looked that whole site over, great stuff

Did you look at prices? Their isolation platforms are quite reasonable, for what appears to be very high quality.
I have used the 3/4" thick Ikea Bamboo cutting boards and I believe they'd work just fine for your needs. Whether you hear the difference vs MDF is debatable, but they're very inexpensive and worth a shot. FWIW, I've heard that the 1 1/4" Ikea cutting boards are actually hollow and not solid wood all the way through. Maybe someone could chime in and confirm.....or not.
Not true! I have made cut outs in them for turntable plinths and they are indeed solid all the way through, although I did find an occasional void the thickness of the vertical bamboo laminations. I didn't feel the voids were detrimental to the solidity of the structure.
.
Freak out...Far out...In out....
Thanks. Good to know.
