Known to work fine in a V-dac are the NE5532, TLO72, OPA2604,OPA2134,OP270FZ and LME49860. I'd like to try the OPA2107 which is unity gain stable and gets great reviews. Looks like it would work but has not been tested as far as I could tell. Would the likelyhood of it oscillating given this info be very very small?? Thanks, Tweaker

You might wanna try LM4562 / LME49720
I tried the LME49860, very similar if not the exact same as the 49720. Hated it. Took it right out and put in a TLO72 I had around since I destroyed the 2607 I had in there. The 49860 is very clear , fast, very wide sound stage and very unnatural, sterile and clinical sounding. I will not try another bipolar device after hearing that. The background hiss on cd's was very irritating. Even the lowly TLO72 was a relief. So many people like this kind of super fast clear sound but I'm going for what is to me a warmer more relaxing and musical presentation. Some folks out there seem to have WOW moments with the Difets. That's where I'll be going soon. T
My experience with LM4562 is that they truly need some burn-in. Fresh out of the box they sound cold and incisive. After about 100hours they are dynamic, balanced, and distortion free, with well articulated bass.
Did you break it in with a signal for 100 hr. or did you just leave it on for 100hrs. Thanks, Tweaker
To break in you need to have signal going trough. Play some music... :)
In my revox CD player I had to add bypass caps, 0.1uF between V+ and V-, and 0.1uF between V- and ground, on the legs of the opamp.
That said, wheter this would be necessary in ur circuit I can't tell; my revox lacked any bypass caps close to the opamp, but most modern circuits have them.
Quite a few IC's can be biased into Class A with very good results.
I was planning on doing some upgrades to the Pioneer Elite PD-59 CD player I got today to use a transport to use with my Musical Paradise DAC (great sounding DAC). Upon inspection of components it has some Elna Starget caps and some other brown looking caps (I will have to remove one to see exactly what it is). This CD player sounds really nice in stock form with the Tube/Mosfet headphone amp I hot rodded.
This deck is known to have that "Stable Platter" design where you have to place the CD upside down on the heavy platter. So I may do the PS upgrade and leave it at.
I'm still waiting on my Nichicon KX caps for the DAC to come in next month. This should really make the DAC sound even better!
Agree, some of the "compatible" bipolar chips sound very nice biased into class-A, nicely smooth. Also a fair bit hotter, which I usually think is good for SS amps of any size, SQ-wise.
I find it hard to believe that somebody who likes the TL072 is going to prefer this though, but then there are quite a few variants of the TL072 and I have to admit some are quite pleasant, especially considering the much higher price of the "better" bipolar chips. My prob is the TL072's slew rate, it can hold them back in some "quality audio" apps.
nt.
Well as to the OPA2107 I was relying on it to cream the OPA2604 but alas I find myself disappointed. At first on one recording I found the 2107 very fast clear with great dynamic range but possible somewhat thin and slightly artificial sounding. When I went to my main comparison song I found cymbals significantly thinner and artificial sounding on the 2107, it possible had better focus than the 2604 but so what. One can possible make a case that the 2604 is excessively full in the lower mids but all in all the musicality and intimacy was missing from the 2107. Compared to the 5532 I found that sometimes cymbals were a little thin when the stick hit them on the 2604 than on the 5532 otherwise the 2604 made the 5532 sound like a toy. Cymbals in general, not just the stick hitting sound were much thinner and artificial on the 2107. Out it goes.
Decision? It's take about 100hr's before you can really judge an I.C. You don't want to swap out too fast.
Have you heard it yet?? Since I don't have a scope I could put it in, fire it up for awhile to see if it gets hot, than turn on the amp at low volume. Any thoughts on that methodology to prevent a disaster if it oscillates?? There are those who think the Difets are the best. Then there are those who think signet NE5532 are the best. This "should" beat the 2604. T
you to get a cheap scope if you are going to do tweaking on gear. You can't always depend on what others say. I did a few tweaks that other's in other forums/posts that said a certain IC would work and found out with using a scope that the part/circuit would cause oscillation. The only way I could have known was with a scope.Sometimes when you have oscillation the part gets hot and or sounds bright/harsh. Ringing (bad) is only found with a scope.
Depending on the application and circuit it's hard to say if a certain part will BEAT another part but the OPA 2604 is a good sounding IC for a good price. The part you are asking about may just sound different but not necessarily better. Let your own ears be the judge of what sounds best in your system. Soon I will have to try that part out and see for myself how it sounds/compares to the OPA-2604.
The OPA-2134 is not bad once you find the trick to tame the slight harshness it has. I have some in my DIY preamp cause I couldn't use the OPA-2604 at the time due to oscillation in that circuit. I'm happy with the sound of that preamp now that I have cured that harshness it had and it's right there with some very expensive preamps in sound. Even a buddy of mine that has a nice system was shocked at how good that DIY preamp sounds compared to the expensive ones I have/had.

Well Cougar, I just dropped in a OPA2134. It's not broken in at all. I am extremely impressed by it so far. From memory since I haven't had the 2604 in for a while I would say that the 2134 blows it away in terms of bass quality, impact focus and maybe depth. Voices are superb. The size and warmth is there without what may be a somewhat excessive low mid emphasis in the 2604. This op amp, 2134, is very forward and in your face, IMHO, just the way I like it. When I first heard Miles come in on a solo on my test song I thought I could hear a fatter brass sound than the 2604. So far the down side is maybe a bit extra buzzing type distortion on his horn. Maybe just a touch of peaky type glare. The 2604 smoother, less in your face and I would say somewhat "hi fiish" sounding in comparison, if that means anything. These two op amps are in my ballpark.
then you can compare.
What's the trick to tame the OPA2134 slight harshness?
Dark energy? Ridiculous!
We live in an electric universe.

It came down to PS and the right combo of bypassing caps on the -/+ pins.
Yo Cougar, Please let us know what you found the right combo of -V to +V was to tame the OPA2134. Thanks, Tweaker
I have the dual 2134 in my Pioneer D 9 SACD player. I'm thinking of changing out the 2134 with Burson audio V5. Any experience with the Burson pampas?
I use an early Burson 'opamp' in last slot in my Bugle2 and it is an appreciable difference. Sound is more open, cleaner, wider, etc. I have read of a newer v5i version which I will step up to soon.
This version is cheaper than previous version, is smaller, and did I say cheaper.
Where do you order it and how much? I went to retailers and then checked three and none had the opportunity amps. Upscale, Parts Connexion and Audio Advisor.
ET
go to the link below and then go to close to the bottom of the page.
There are options for ordering there.
And then I will send it off to Bill Thalman to install. I assume the 2134 is soldered in?
Thanks
AL
on my Bugle2 the opamp was soldered in. as your guy to put a dip slot in vs soldering in the new chips. that way you can upgrade in the future and you apply no damaging heat to the new op amps.
Good advice-I will do that.
Thanks
