If you are committed to using an XLR<-->RCA cable interface method in your system, you might consider buying two pairs of the same make/model XLR<-->RCA terminated cables as part of your new active crossover project goal. If the cable is directional, make sure each pair of cables are terminated with the proper connectors positioned from source to load at the precise ends, and clearly marked that way...

So the RCA electronics and the XLR electronics expect a different impedance from the cable. Does mixing them up do anything bad an audiophie might care about??
I always wondered.. And you are the guy who might give me an answer I respect.
Impedance matching is critical for a digital cable application, since the nature of the digital signal is very sensitive vs. that of an analog signal. Not necessarily an unacceptable sonic detriment for a balanced XLR to single-ended RCA interface, especially if the preamplifier output is a very robust and low-noise design, IMO.
I don't think Cardas would build a proper adapter if the interface method were so bad. That said, I won't experiment with my preamplifier RCA outputs into my power amplifier XLR inputs using an adapter to compare it with the power amplifier RCA inputs, anytime soon. I would say be careful to keep the length of the interconnect cable as short as possible vs. a balanced XLR--> XLR interface.
Namely I am currently buying up Crown D-75 rack amps when I find them. No more issues once I have 6 of them.
