Yep fixed value is the ticket

Is there ROOM for a stepped attenuator? I'm NOT going to crack the case or buy any parts until I have a better idea.
Too much is never enough
Do you really want to fool with that and the expense? There is a reason 99% of amps dont have that control. Why not just use very good resistors at a suitable value which would save money, time and be the best sound wise.

Yes, I think I just MIGHT want to fool with it. First step is to crack the case and LOOK. That doesn't cost me anything. If, as I suspect, the pot is tab soldered to a sub-board than I can easily substitute a pair of resistors which ADD to whatever value the pot is. I would need to decide on the desired attenuation, too.
More complicated would be a GoldPoint Attenuator. Still only 3 wires, but at that point SPACE becomes the limit.
Still in the 'mulling' phase.

Also consider the Dact volume control. I had one installed in my previous preamp. The tech said it was the best tracking[?], matched volume control he had ever tested. Although that was a two channel device. I imagine you would prefer two one channel units,
