Hi Duster,
I use cinder blocks for speaker stands. I looked all over for 12" stands. They are not common anymore except flimsy wood stands. I noticed that cinder blocks were the right height. I tried them and they sound very good.

Follow Ups:
I put together an audio system at a relatives house, and used two cinder blocks stacked on top of each other, positioned on a spiked MDF board as a speaker stand base, and liked what I heard. IIRC, I used four Blue-Tack balls as an interface between the two cinder blocks, and between the top cinder block and the loudspeaker bottom panel.
I do plan to add spikes and some kind of damping. Blue-Tack sounds like a good, reasonably priced solution. I had already bought some spikes, but they disappeared (long story!).
