Lew et al. Please read HumbleHH's review of the Russian cap. Exactly what I want, in words that is. Many of the other caps are beyond my price range. My main amp is using Nichicon polyester. Shouldn't be to hard to beat. My very limited experience with polystyrene was that they were bright. The one Solen I heard a long time ago , bottom of the rung, cheapest was on the bright side with glare. I'm sure there other models are better. Never heard good high quality polystyrenes but the ones I see are way beyond my price range. The CDE 940c and the Russians are in my price range and are described as what I am looking for by HHF. The Audio Theta PPT gets review as what I want, warm, rich, liquid... by one reviewer and thin and bright by another?? $30 to $250 caps are out of my price range, especially since Uber has destroyed my income. No harm in trying the K78s. Russian teflons are cheap but very physically large for a given value, but if they fit, you might want to give them a try, in addition to the K78. Other guys rave about the K40, when it comes to Russian oil caps. I've never heard them. They're cheap too. Go to TubesDIY and search on "K40".
I agree as regards Solen metallized polypropylene film caps; they suck, IMO. I probably should not have even mentioned polystyrenes because they are virtually gone from the market in all but very low values suitable for RIAA correction but little else. But, believe me, they could be fantastic back when you could buy them. REL makes a few still, maybe. REL polypropylene film and foil types are pretty good bang for the buck.
Lew, Thanks for sending me over to Tube DIY. Lot's of talk about coupling caps for tube amps over there. Tweaker
Lew et tal, The Rel Audiocap Theta PPT tin foil cap gets a similar review as being warm extra rich and such by a famous reviewer and might be in the running. It is panned as being thin and bright by another muy famous cap reviewer. This first reviewer said they were thin and clinical at first, I think I have that correct, and then completely changed into warm and extra rich after burn in. Quite a transition. I was once told that tin is usually warm?? It's down to CDE 940c,Russian K78-34 and the contradictory Audiocap Theta PPT, I think. The description of the K78-34 by HHF sounds perfect........ Tweaker
Buy your own caps and decide for yourself. Also get a bicycle.
Well Uncle Mike, Looks like I'm going to have to roll a few. Hopefully I won't destroy the circuit boards. I don't think the K78 comes in 600v. I don't get the bicycle thing?? Tweaker
I think he's a cab driver.
