I recent got some Clarity MR cap. I tried to determine if there is an outer foil for this capacitor using procedure mentioned here. I have been very familiar with this procedure
To my surprise, I cannot determine which is the outer foil. That lead me to believe that the Clarity MR cap is winded in such a way that there is no Outer foil.
Can anyone confirm or comment on this ?

The MR film has a series construction-- in effect two caps in series inside one damping capsule. The outer foil of one "cap" is the inner foil of the other. Picture the right-hand outer foil associated with the left lead-out, and the left-hand outer foil associated with the right lead-out. When reversed in situ the construction is identical.Enjoy!

My test results confirm that.

First of all, thanks for pointing us to the video in the first place. Mr Carlson is an excellent and very methodical teacher. But I was struck by the fact that it's probably much easier for the average hobbyist to determine film capacitor "polarity" one capacitor at a time, using a 'scope (or good AC voltmeter) in the manner he describes, than it is to build that contraption for automating the process. The latter might be worth building if one were analyzing tens or hundreds of capacitors per day, but not at the pace that I install capacitors. I was also surprised that he seems to feel so strongly about getting the outer foil oriented correctly. I care about doing it right, but in truth, i have never heard any difference between "right" and "wrong", when I've accidentally installed a film capacitor "backwards". Anyone else?
