If I had three coils, say 0.8mHs what would the sonic differences be between these three? Ignoring the wire diameter for resistance.
These would be for a simple first or maybe second order woofer filter.
Flat lay
Bobbin or aka air core
Steel laminate
thanks

Well, the steel laminate will use much less wire, and that is a good thing. Iron cores get a bad rap these days, mainly from uninformed people parroting what they 'learn' on the internet. The truth is, an iron core can be designed so it does not saturate in use, and will be the best performer. The Erse iron cores (and other) perform very well. We took an Erse iron core (rated for 500 watts), and put 1kW through it in the lab, and it still did not saturate. And SET users pushing a whopping 10 watts shun them needlessly.
Thanks. I never used an iron core on a 0.8mH coil before.
At that value, it doesnt really matter. I dont even know if you can get an iron core in that value, but the bottom line is, the less series resistance, the better, all things being equal. Avoiding coils and bi-amping is even better!
