Hi Hahax, your probably right. This is what the manual said in the last sentence about tone controls.( The reference point should always be the center setting which gives no frequency discrimination). Do you think in a rebuild I should just clean the tone controls the best I can and keep them centered? My goal is to take them out of the circuit if possible. Another problem I have Hahax is the manuals list of resistors. No wattage rating is stated. I have trouble with sizing up the 1/2 watt and 1 watt resistors.I don't want to make a mistake ordering. Thanks for all your help Hahax and Tre.I'm going to need all the help I can muster. I got to build these, I already bought the new electrolytic cans!.....Mark K.
Follow Ups:
My gut is clean them. There was a good reason for tone controls(and balance controls) that we've lost in our current minimalist approach. And maybe in a state of the art design it's the way to go. But old Dynas are nice stuff but certainly not state of the art. And sometimes the option of judicious use of tone controls can compensate a bit for lousy recordings which are all too common.
My preamp has tone controls and I wouldn't be without them.
