IIRC the super caps technology is an off shoot of both the flash caps and the SMD devices. They have achieved very high microfarad ratings by acid etching the plates to give much greater surface area and thus more microfarads.
While great for memory back up and such , I still like the traditional caps, they seem to have less of an etchy top end and are smoother overall. The penalty is that their sizes are significantlly larger, and simply because of that I notice the offerings are diminishing rapidly. (Buy your 600 v 20 uF caps now !)

The acid etched surfaces of the newer generation of caps is quite different from the original and traditional flat foil used. IIRC capacitors were originally parallel metal sheets which later became foil. While more surface area will create more capacitance, the peaks and valleys created by etching the foil, IMHO, changes the voltage which can arc between the so called parallel plates.
IMHE the older parallel plate designs have better bass but you pay the penalty in their increased size.
Just my opinion of course, no research to back it up except by hands on experience
Thanks for your input.
Seems there is great potential with the Super caps. I also still like my Black Gates but then that is a different animal and purpose.
