I have been using bags of charcoal strategically placed around my speakers and the effect is amazing in the bass. I leave the chacoal in the bags and place the bags in large plastic storage boxes to tidy up the whole thing and the bass and lower mids are amazing. You mention crushing the charcoal to affect the tonal balance. Can you say more about this? Without crushing the charcoal I get real strong bass. Does crushing the charcoal improve upper mids and highs? Here is a link to a comercial product from Acousticfields that uses charcoal.

Funny thing is activated charcoal sucks in my opinion.
Two much charcoal and the trebles get muted.
I break up the briquettes and since they are in a plastic bag anyway, I can adjust the amount of charcoal to get the desired tonal balance.
I wont debate the merits...I happen to like it. But when you break it up do you get less muted highs?
not really. in decreasing the amount of charcoal i get better highs in my system
