I sold my lightly modded Oppo 980H I had been using as a transport and now have a new (to me) transport, a Sony DVP-S7700. Got it from eBay for $79.99. A few scratches on the top and sides; camouflaged those with a black marker. Hooked it up and hit play. No audio. Realized I needed to connect it to the widescreen to access the OSD and set preferences to digital and PCM. Done. Got sound. WOW! Listened for several hours to various types of music. The sound is big and open. Soundstage is big, more space around individual instruments. More detail, vocals are outstanding, more of everything that's good. But after about two hours I'm thinking its a little bright so I power down.
I removed the cover and beheld a bright and shinning gem. The interior was dust free. First mod was to clip the attached ac cord and attache a pig tail IEC connector. Next I wrapped some tourmaline crystals around the ac interior connection. I then applied rope caulk around the chassis (thanks Dryginger). I reattached the cover and powered up. Opened the disk tray and using terra-cotta paint pens, painted it green, orange and blue. Powered down and turned it over and attached diy footers made of cork and neoprene from an old mouse pad.
Hooked it up again and relaxed while listening to beautiful music. No more brightness. Sound is really smoooooth now. I guess the proper term for what I heard is musical. I feel more of the emotion of the music and I'm very happy to be a audiophile.
Best to you,

I know, I am NOOB. But I appreciate what you guys are teaching me!
What does the rope caulk do? as well as the tourmaline crystals?
Thank you.

Tell us how the player sounds?
Hi fantja. As you know I'm using it as a transport. I'm very fortunate to have found it and enjoy it immensely. It sounds wonderful. I also have a Mac Mini music system. To my ears there is no discernible difference in sound quality between the two. I often will play the same music on both systems and use the toggle switch on the Musical Fidelity V90 dac to compare the two systems.
In the past two weeks I've added some Belden 8402 cable as ic's and today some WE16GA wire as speaker cables. Both have brought me the sound I've been looking for for about five years. I'm really happy with my low cost system.
Thanks! for the update.
Hello. Great work. Question: what does painting the cd tray result in?
Thanks.
Ain't tweakin' great?

Congratulations, Marvin!
If you wish to test an inexpensive alternative to cork and neoprene, consider making footers from 12"x12"x0.5" Very Soft White F10 Felt Sheeting 1/2" Thick 2842T29 @ $29.00 approx.incl. shipping from McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com/#felt/=wapqpf . I have found its exclusive use under components and sandwiched between maple blocks produces more musical depth and detail.

Hi DG,
of the ten different felts why did you choose the one you did?
Pixelphoto,
It was recommended for making speaker defraction rings so I bought 6 feet @ approx $80 and had a lot let over after concluding that there was no way that I was ever going to reach an acceptable solution to defraction rings - impossible to cut with clean, smooth, professional edges and to keep stuck in position on the speakers from which they kept falling off. Will shortly be posting of the good-looking defraction ring solution for much enhanced, focused sound that I have since found at less than half the price of the only effective commercial alternative.
So my use of this felt for footers was from trying to make lemonade out of lemon and happily finding that it provides audibly more dynamic sound than cork and neoprene. I did not test other felts of different thicknesses and simply commend this from comparative experience against our common starting materials...
Dryginger
DG, I tried the same as you but with some artificial felt from the big box. Didn't work. My speakers are Definitive Technology STS tower speakers and very narrow with little surface space to attach refraction rings.

That's a great find. Nice modification job!
Do you have further plans in terms of particular vibration control footers and/or a platform?
Hi Duster. Thanks to you I learned about the pig tail trick.
As the pic shows I have diy footers of cork and neoprene laminate. Bamboo cutting board with felt pads and
the common particle board? shelving.
What would you suggest as an improvement?
pixelphoto (Marvin)
For use with the laminated bamboo board, I suggest you replace the set of four cork/neoprene pads with Herbie's Audio Lab Tenderfoot feet, or experiment with a less expensive set of four AcoustiFeet soft silicone vibration control feet.
Find out the weight of the Sony unit, and choose the AcoustiFeet model that's intended for the particular weight level.
You might also choose to buy one or more higher weight level AcoustiFeet models in order to experiment with them for system tuning purposes, since all of the AcoustiFeet models will sound different when placed under the Sony unit.
See link:
Hi Duster, I have been experimenting with the AcoustiFeet soft silicone vibration control feet you suggested. I also rediscovered the various Vibrapods I had and tried those (#2) under the Sony (transport) and also the Herbie's Audio Lab Tenderfoot feet that have been serving under the NAD integrated amp.
I settled on the Vibrapods under the Sony and the Herbie's Audio Lab Tenderfoot feet to remain under the NAD and the AcoustiFeet soft silicone vibration control feet under the Grant tube buffer and DAC. Subject to change of course.
Thanks again for your generous help,
pixelphoto (Marvin)
Thanks Duster, I'll try the AcoustiFeet first and hear what happens.
By the way do you know of another source of cryoed IEC pig tail adaptors other than Take Five?
Dedicated Audio sells the cryo'd Schurter cord-mount IEC jack.

Thank you sir.
Beautiful pics! Marvin.
you really have talent, my friend. Do you mod any/all CD/DVD spinners?
Hi fantja, thank you. Nope, I have modded the original Sony PS-1 following a recipe I found in another forum. I did this to teach myself how to solder and desolder and for this old guy to learn some new tricks. Those itty bitty SMD are pretty easy if you have a lighted magnifying lamp. I actually sold three of them which was pretty cool. And I lightly modded the two Oppo's (980H and 981H) I had. And thats it. I just copy from other forum members who really know what their doing.

Sony ES mechanisms are some of the finest in the industry. To bad they do out OEM them. I believe only Accuphase has access and only because Morita's daughtee is married to the head of the company.
Their CD ES mechanisms as well as their older cassette stuff had incredible build quality
