Just before the room gets rearranged for practical living.
No space for a dedicated room, but had the brief luxury of setting up the room to make the system sound decent.
My REMOVABLE custom damping treatment for my otherwise live room.
A reflective nightmare between the floor and windows. At last the system sounds like a close approximation to the show rigs I've heard. Still far the MBL room, easily 100K+ far!
With the Home Depot shower curtains, and area rug, was able to tame the obvious problems you could pick out from the pic.
For a serious listen or movie night,(plasma on a rollaway)attach these with velcro, then rip them off.

I'd say you're on the right track.
I would opt for a larger area rug about twice the size of the one you currently have and that should go a long way.
I'd remove the hideous looking shower curtains as I doubt their doing much of anything anyway since they too are reflective.
I'm sure you can get some decent looking inexpensive drapes at Home Depot that not only would spruce up the room but also be less reflective than the shower curtains.
But frankly I would just opt for the bigger and thicker rug and remove the shower curtains.
Yeah, the shower curtains are ridiculous. They were spares unused after a bathroom remodel. With them, the sound is more focused.
The room will look nothing like this, after remodel and furniture/curtains in place.
The speakers will be firing from the long wall instead and sofa on opposite.
