Hi !
i see many cheap boards on ebay.com that are complete or almost complete dacs. Only connectors and mains transformer are missing.
Do you have any direct experience of any of them ?
I am quite curious and decided to buy the one in the picture.
It uses the same Cirrus Logic CS4398 dac chip present in the very nice sounding:
- Korg dsd recorded 2000
- Prism Audio Orpheus interface
It is usb powered
I am not so naive to think that the dac chip is everything, but still it must be a very good one if high end pro equipment use it, am i right ?
Any advice/suggestion/opinion ?
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards,
bg

You might consider choosing a competent outboard 5VDC linear regulated power supply rather than USB power. IME, even a humble 5VDC digital optical Toslink repeater/splitter device benefited from using such rather than USB power, as well as a 5VDC switching wall wart power supply, for that matter. I simply selected a high quality 5VDC linear regulated power supply with double the required amperage rating, and in my case replaced the molded AC connector of the captive 18 AWG AC power cord (I left the DC umbilical cord alone) with a Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plug which provides a more musically coherent presentation. YMMV
Hi thanks a lot for the valuable reply
I am buying some of these dacs to try them.
I hope to receive the first pretty soon.
I have been told that a dac relying only on 5VDC is limited by design and i tend to agree. There is no enough voltage "headroom" for the regulators and also op-amps tend to give better performances at higher supply voltages.
Anyway I have already a usb power supply from Teradak and indeed it gives a remarkable boost to the sound, cleaner and more powerful
Better on all aspects.
On this basis i am redirecting my attention to dac with higher Vsupply and also external PS adapter that can be located far away from circuits.
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,

I'm sure you will be very pleased with the results. Just be prepared to be dealing with naked boards and wires for a while.
The cost of digital has steadily gone down as the integration level has increased. Also, the Chinese sell things at practically cost.
Hi and thanks !
Bought it and waiting to receive it. I am very curious even if i am not so naive to think that the DA chip is everything.
I read a very interesting comment about 3 different dacs using all the same DA chip in different way of course.
The differences in sound were huge.
With the most expensive one being the best (the fabulous Prism Audio Orpheus mentioned above).
So i bought the board on the link using the same DA chip.
Just for fun of course ... but i am curious to listen.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
