Thanks for coming back and reporting. I wonder if the "pop" you're looking for is an artifact or accurate reproduction. In any case, please try to find a descriptive term better than "plastic." That just doesn't carry much meaning.
Glad you're finding something you like. If you continue experimenting, please try Sonicap. They are cheap, cheap , cheap. You stated initially you were interested in value. They define it, and I think they're better than any you've tried yet.
You've already tried one film/foil: the AudioCap Theta, which is one of the worst caps I've ever heard. The brightness and brittle edge it put on everything hurt my ears. Perhaps it's all different with your tube amp system. One of the advantages you should realize from genuine film/foil caps is a greater sense of depth and spaciousness, and a more realistic tonality. I found aluminum to sound better than tin, and copper better yet. There might not be much "pop" there, though, so perhaps you should save your money instead. Mundorf Silver/Oil is not a film/foil cap, but it does have a very lively and realistically detailed high end. Painfully expensive.
Peace,

I will try the sonicaps
Ok points well taken. I guess what I mean by "plastic" is a muted tonality lacking color, with a roundness or overall smoothness that sounds fake. The "pop" is found in dynamic range and things sounding more like themselves if that helps at all. Its always hard to describe what you hear and I tend to pay attention to how it makes me feel and the "take away" from what I heard.
Which is more than I can say for a lot of people who come here and ask for advice, promise to report, and are never heard from again.
It certainly is difficult to describe the finely nuanced qualities of sound. We appreciate the effort to share the results of your experiments. Your elucidation of the word plastic is very good. And I understand the importance of "pop," but not at the expense of accuracy. Delicate balance, there.
Lots of interest in coupling caps here lately. Keep on searching. It does get a bit expensive and can get a little tedious, but it's worth it to find the one that fits your system and taste.
Peace,
Tom E
