I own a CD player which utilizes a 1amp, slow blow fuse. I do have a Synergistic Research 1.6 fuse that is extra and it would be great to use it if I can.
My question is would it be ok to use this 1.6 fuse in place of a 1 amp fuse or would that be taking a risk?
Thank you,
George

Wouldn't that be 60% larger than the 1 amp fuse that is supposed to be used in the CDP? Also I would imagine the lag time of the 1.6 amp slow blow fuse would also be greater than that of the 1 amp fuse.
Well, as the saying goes," everybody knows that..."
The question is, is it going to blow up my player?
The question is, is it going to blow up my player?
I can't answer that with any certainty. Yes in the event of an internal catastrophic AC ground fault event YES the fuse will blow. But what if a component fails and causes an overload condition and because instead of the safety factor the manufacture/Design Engineer built into the CDP by using a 1 amp fuse the overload condition could well exceed 1.6 amps before the fuse blows and opens the circuit. Will other components be damaged as well before the fuse blows?
It's you decision to make in the end. If it's just a cheapo CDP and something does go wrong and the fuse blows and the repair cost is more than the unit is worth you just throw it away and buy a new one. Hell I have read on this forum where guys have eliminated the fuse altogether for better sound of a piece of equipment.
Final note, if you asked the same question of the manufacture/ Design Engineer about replacing his 1 amp fuse with a 1.6 amp fuse what do you think his response would be?
Best of luck,
Jim
Hello, Does anyone know if there is a difference between a slow blow fuse and a Time lag fuse. I would like to get some Hifi Tuning fuses for my B&K AVR505 receiver for the internal line fuses and the B&K specification lists a 6A Time Lag fuse. Can I used a 6A slow blow fuse in this application? Thanks.

It will be fine. The tolerances of fuses anyway means that there's little difference in reality between the two. Any fault condition that will blow a 1A fuse will also blow a 1.6A fuse.
ET,
Not quite sure what you mean. The stock 1 amp is a slow blow as is the 1.6 amp. Are you saying that because the 1.6 is a slow blow I should not use it?
George
it isn't a slo blo fuse - they make that value (1.6) in fast and slo blo.

Alan,
CD is not under warranty yet I still do not want to damage anything..... It is just that I do have this SR fuse and the rating are rather close and otherwise the fuse is just going to sit in a box or I might, if lucky, get 30% of its value if I try to sell it.
George
It will be ok. Is your player still on warrenty because doing this will void your warrenty.
Alan
Mike,
Thanks very much.......
I would. Fuses are not real accurate. The typical event that blows fuses is usually a much greater amperage. YMMV.
