I have been using a binding post bypass system for over 15 years and will so on my new Class A amps I will be making soon. Also works on speakers. Basically, you use a binding post as a clamp. You bring the wire from inside the amp or speakers through a hole in the chassis/box and wrap the wire (tinned) around the outside of the binding post or through its hole. You then clamp your speaker wire directly to the wire that is wrapped around the post. You still get to have the usability of having a binding post but you get the sound of $400 set of connectors for very little. I am going to be using the $27 a set of four connectors from Parts Connexion: http://www.partsconnexion.com/product7481.html.
They have a hole in the post and also open far enough to be useful...also you can cut the red insulator on the back and use the hot and ground separately.

True for power cords and I.C.'s. Every connector is a small filter. Direct wiring is not for the weak of heart.

Ric, I read about that method while doing a bit of research.
In the case of the Khartago it would have required more messing around. The Groneberg wiring Klaus uses would not have reached and more would have needed to be obtained. Then there is the aesthetics and retained value.
While $400 is very expensive for binding posts - in the big scheme it's not a deal breaker.
In sound improvement terms, they are actually still very high value compared to other tweaks.

  Many amps, etc. sound better with the cover off.....so, one could just solder the speaker wires directly to the wires where they are soldered to the inside of the binding posts. Now you have the better sound of "no cover" and the better sound of "no binding post" and you can always unsolder when you want to resell. Of course, there is the "dust in the amp issue"...handled by covering it with a flat piece of something when not in use. Spades and bananas wreck the sound too. This way you have bare wire soldered to bare wire. There are always practical issues to deal with...however, creativity knows no bounds.

    It never ends.
    I'd guess that most people would balk at soldering directly to the amps/speakers for flexibility reasons.
    
    The nice thing about the WBT's is that they give you superior sound without any compromise in utility.
